AirPods Hearing Test not showing on iPhone

Just purchased AirPods Pro 2 and wanted to use them as an additional hearing aid. iPhone has been updated to iOS 18 but when I go to the AirPods menu, there is no option to have them give me a hearing test. Is this not available yet? If so, where can I find that option.

Please read thru the replies in this thread. Make sure you satisfy all three requirements.

In order to use the hearing test and hearing aid function, three things must be true.

  1. Your iPhone must be updated to 18.1. Here are instructions to update. Update your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support
  2. Your AirPd Pros 2 must be updated to their latest firmware, which 7B19. Here are instructions to update. About firmware updates for AirPods - Apple Support
  3. You Apple Account must be registered in a country that supports the hearing aid feature. Check your country here.  AirPods Pro 2 - Hearing Health Feature Availability - Apple

Hi, this exactly is the solution. Thanks for writing your entry.

Bought my Airpods Pro 2 on Amazon (Apple Store) and they didn't work.

Went to the Apple Store in person.

In order to update the Airpods firmware, you need to put them in their case, close it, then connect it to a charger.

Then, leave your iPhone nearby for around 20-30 minutes.

The update is silent; no notifications.

Next, once the Airpods show the firmware is 7Bxx (the xx is some number), restart your iPhone.

This fixed the problem for me.

Nope. Just load the Mimi hearing test app. If you want to set them up as hearing aids you can do that to. Just set them up with an iPad or iPhone running an older IOS than 18.1.

You access the settings by going to:

settings/accessibility/audio and visual/headphone accommodations

Mine have been working since September and this method has been available since September 2022. They work very well for me and I won’t be upgrading any time soon.

It works! Kind of. Updated my iPhone 13 to iOS 18.1 today and paired it with AirPod Pro 2 with 7B19 and took the hearing test and successfully set up with hearing aid settings.

As a $5,200 aids wearer for the past four years I think I’ll hang on to the pro level aid for a while longer. The AirPods do give me a Bluetooth connection to my phone now with controls to be able to participate in conversations at a boosted hearing level without a change of hearing device. And, there was an adjustment period with the pro aids as well so I need to give these time.

If you have a device that uses IOS 17.7.1 or older you can get them working as hearing aids through Headphone Accommodations. If you are on IOS 18, 18.01 or 18.1 there is no fix yet until your country approves their use.

Once their use is approved as long as your hearing is mild to moderate they will work. If your hearing loss is severe or worse, they won't.

The UK currently does not have the AirPods Hearing Health feature due to regulatory restrictions, meaning Apple needs additional approval from local health authorities before they can release this feature in the UK market, likely related to the classification of AirPods as a medical device for hearing assistance; this is particularly relevant for the "Hearing Aid" function on newer AirPods Pro models.
