SAMSUNG 32DM80 Monitor camera is not registering under hardware in my System Report

I'm connecting my new monitor to my MacStudio, but the camera isn't working in FT or Zoom. In my System Report > Hardware>camera, no camera shows up.

I've already many remedies in the forum, have tried:

• Removing hdmi cable, replacing it with a USBC-USBC cable, using the remote for the monitor, resetting the USC Port setting from MD80 to USBC, restarting, no visual at all.

• Returned to HDMI-HDMI cable, reset setting in USB port to DM80, restarting.

• Detaching and reattaching the adapter to the camera to make sure it was secure, then attaching to the monitor, making sure it is secure.

Mac Studio, macOS 15.2

Thanks. I think the cable did the trick as you suggested. After that, it was a matter of figuring out which configuration of settings in the Samsung menu worked. Samsung tech support leaves a lot to be desired as far as Macs go, but we've been in and out of all those connected devices settings, etc., and figured out that under the USB port set up, there are 3 options: automatically, Smart Monitor, and USB. When we tried USB with the USB cable they provided it didn't work. With the better cable you suggested, when we went back in a second time and switched it to USB, it seemed to do the trick. The camera was finally showing up in my system hardware in System Report. Huge sigh of relief. Thanks again for the excellent help.

Many users will rather do backflips before they would use two cables to talk to one display.

But the choice is yours. The computer and the display are both perfectly capable of using only a short, certified SuperSpeed PLUS 10 G /sec USB cable to run everything on the display, including the camera.

A USB Charging cable without any of those words on it can only work at very low speeds, and can not supply display data. A certified USB cable longer than one meter will cause data errors and the display will quickly go blank (or never light up at all.)

I may not be stating the issue clearly. The Samsung display is showing up. What isn't showing up is its "dedicated" camera, the SlimFit Camera. Thus, no video on FaceTime or Zoom. It's the monitor's camera which attached via a magnetic connector on the back of the monitor. I've removed and reattached the adapter for the camera and reattached the assembly to the monitor a couple of times. I can open the Samsung "home" panel via a remote control and test that the camera itself does function and is attached to the monitor, but the MacStudio isn't "seeing" the camera. I've shut down and restarted several times after each attempted solution. End result: monitor showing up; it's camera is not.

SAMSUNG 32DM80

the user manual available here:

https://downloadcenter.samsung.com/content/UM/202410/20241030035908001/BN81-25971A-620_EUG_SMGRPNAKD_NA-SA-KR_ENG-US_241018.0.pdf

suggests you may need to use ON-Screen display, or possibly this method:

  • Camera Experience
  • Connect a USB camera, or use the SmartThings app on your mobile phone to connect a camera. Connect a camera to use video call, home workout, and other new features.
  • This function may not be supported depending on the model.
  • For details on how to connect, refer to Camera Sharing ( (left directional button) Connected Devices
  • Connection Guide Smartphone Camera Sharing).

<< So, I've already tried attaching a USB-C cable to the back of the monitor and to may MacStudio. It yielded no image. >>

The Mac does not rely on windows-like side-loaded "Drivers" which are actually packages of resolutions and settings for a specific display. Instead, it goes straight to the immutable source -- it asks the display itself.

To get a Mac display to become active, you need the Mac to query the display, and the display to answer with its name and capabilities. Otherwise, the display will not be shown as present, and no data will be sent to the display. "No signal detected" is generated by the DISPLAY, not by the Mac.

This query is only sent at certain times:

• at startup

• at wake from sleep — so momentarily sleeping and waking your Mac may work

• at insertion of the Mac-end of the display-cable, provided everything on that cable is ready-to-go

• hold the Option key while you click on the (Detect Display) button that will appear in Displays preferences (from another display)

so try some of those things and see if the display 'comes alive'.

So, I've already tried attaching a USB-C cable to the back of the monitor and to may MacStudio. It yielded no image. This camera that comes with the Samsung DM80 attaches to the back of the monitor with a small magnetic connector. When you say "camera inside a display," do you mean built in? Would this one that integrates via its own mini connector work or not? They call it a "SlimFit Camera."

The camera that comes with the Samsung DM80 attaches to the back, using a small magnetic connector.
