My phone is now working!

So after looking at the suggestions for a fix, I discovered that a soft reset worked perfectly for me. Suddenly Siri is working and there's no dictation lag. I'm no longer grumpy with my phone. I strongly recommend this for everyone suffering lag on their 16 Pro Max (or possibly other models,) as this was a lifesaver for me.

Here's the simple process:

  1. Press and quickly release the Volume up button
  2. Press and quickly release the Volume down button
  3. Immediately press and hold the Side button until the screen goes blank…keep holding until you see the Apple logo (will take quite a few seconds.)

Done! This is all it took to get my phone working great. I hope it works for you, too.

I did your recommendation, although the screen didn’t go blank with the Apple logo, but as soon as I press the volume up and down quickly……..SIRI now WORKS!

Keep in mind I was on phone with Apple 🍎 tech-support and ran me through all the settings that I had already done… even a soft reset. It wasn’t till after I read your post and decided to try it. When Apple 🍎 tech-support calls me back, I will inform them your quick fix. Thank You !!!!

I had the same problem so I just started messing with my phone. I went into My accessibility setting And I turned off vocal shortcuts, and I turned a few other things off and then all of a sudden it started working. I don’t know if that would help but my Siri wasn’t working for a couple of days either after downloading the new update.

Maybe try not being condescending in your responses. Some of us are pretty good at troubleshooting and telling if the issue is due to an update. It’s the OS update that is causing Siri to be erratic, laggy or otherwise unresponsive. Too many of us are having similar issues, when Siri worked fine prior to IOS 18. In my case she completes an action before even responding, or does not respond at all. She may or may not take a text message dictation. She’ll often tell me to unlock my phone to complete an action, through that hadn’t been the case before. It’s the OS, it broke Siri.

My issue is exactly the same as JPark275. Siri will read out loud a story and a joke, but will only display the weather and not say it verbally. Basically I if I ask her to do anything, 95% of the stuff is now nonverbal. Very few things she will actually answer out loud; she will only display the information and not say it. Also, she no longer will reboot the phone when I ask her to restart it. Then if I ask her to turn on or off “do not disturb”, she says it’s already on or off even though it isn’t. She still will switch it to whatever I say, but she always says it’s already set to what I’m asking her to change it to.

I've just read through all the pages here (yes and tried everything suggested) but the issues, although slightly different, seem to have a pattern about them in that everyone seems to have had a functional Siri, updated and then a variety of different problems render Siri unusable in CarPlay.

In my case I popped out for messages around 10am, called home and sent some messages through Siri on CarPlay and everything worked. Arrived home and updated to IOS18. At around midday same day I went out to the golf and tried phoning home on the way. Siri came up on the screen, said the usual "Uh huh?" and I asked him to phone home. At which point the icon swirled for a second, froze then CarPlay disappeared and I was back to the car settings. Same for every action with Siri having to answer audibly and do something. Maps still works visually in CarPlay as I can see the blue line, turns etc.

Siri also works perfectly well without CarPlay and will respond as usual. This IS a Siri in CarPlay issue.

The only thing that changed was the updating of the IOS.

it's really frustrating, now Siri settings say if you choose "automatic" rather than "prefer voice responses" or "prefer silent responses"

At least for me right now, Siri does not speak, only shows responses on the screen… Even if my phone is NOT on silent!

The problem is if I choose "prefer spoken responses" that it says that Siri will speak them even if your phone is on silent

if I choose automatic, Siri does not speak ever so it is the same as if I'm choosing "prefer silent"

I hope someone fixes this because I like to have it on automatic but I like to hear Siri be able to speak when I'm driving and ask Siri a question

This is how I figured something has changed because I was just driving and needed to ask Siri a question

but Siri would not speak

When I asked about the volume, it said the volume was at maximum""
