Digital Wallet Apple Card Number Keeps Changing

Earlier this month one of my auto-pays was declined because they had my digital Apple Card number but it had been changed. Message in my transactions history even reads "Declined - Card Replaced". That is the only way I knew the number changed. I gave the vendor the updated information and the charge went through. This morning, less than two weeks later, the same thing happened. A vendor who had the updated card number had the payment declined because the card number was changed again. Neither time had I asked for a new card number - and the card was over a year away from expiration date. Does anyone know why the card number would change (I do not have advanced fraud protection activated)? And, is there a way of being notified when the number is changed so that I can update auto charges? I have had my card for years (since they were first issued) and this is the first time(s) this has happened.

I just remembered the first time was just after I did stop/block a fraudulent charge. Does the card number change when you do that? It still wouldn't explain the second number change.
