GarageBand and the PreSonus Audiobox GO

I'm trying to play my guitar through GarageBand.

I just got the Presonus Audiobox GO. It works fine when I use their Studio One software. But when I use GarageBand, nothing comes through on channel 2. On channel 1, I get some faint crackling occasionally, it cuts in and out (mostly out), but I can hear that it's the guitar.

What gives? Either channel works on Studio One, but I don't want to use Studio One. I want to use GarageBand.

I tried reinstalling GarageBand, I made sure it was up-to-date, and I made sure it had mic permissions. Presonus says it's a software issue, not a hardware issue, so they can't help me. (Which is understandable.)

Wish I could reply with an answer, but I have this same exact issue. And oddly MainStage works fine. I have two audio interfaces and both getting the same crackling barely audible guitar.

What I've done so far and none of this has worked:

  • Input and Output channels are set up correctly (this isn't the issue I promise.)
  • I have multiple interfaces in which to record on my Mac, a Presonos Audiobox and a PodGO. Both have the same results.
  • I've changed out USB cables, and even purchased USB A to USB C so that I would plug directly into the Mac rather than a hub (because MBPs don't have USB A ports). Main Stage is fine with the USB hub so I'm sure it's not the cables.
  • Tried multiple guitars and patch cords.
  • I deleted all third party VSTs and deleted GarageBands preferences. Even deleted GarageBand and reinstalled.
  • Turned off "Enable Audio Units"

No idea where to go from here. Any help would be much welcomed.

I still haven’t solved it, but I’ll tell you two things that might be helpful.

  1. I was pleasantly surprised to find I could quickly get on a call with Apple for GarageBand support. I hadn’t even bothered to look to see if that was an option because I assumed I wouldn’t be (or if it was it wouldn’t be any good). It was a long call, and the tier 1 support guy wasn’t able to figure it out. (They have another level of support but I didn’t have time to continue.)
  2. One of the things he had me try was to use GarageBand on another user profile. I created another profile with a different name and password (don’t know if that’s important or not but it’s what he told me to do) and skipped all the things I could skip (e.g., I didn’t connect an Apple ID). Everything worked fine on this new profile.

So, at least in my case, I can use this interface the way I wanted to. I just can’t use it on my usual profile (yet).

If you have a chance to get on the phone with support, I’d recommend it. If the tier 1 agent can’t figure it out, I bet the next level can.

And please let me know if you get to the bottom of it!
