How do you retain original formatting when pasting text within a paragraph in Pages on Mac?

This seems such a basic thing, but in spite of reading the user documentation and looking at the forum I still can't do it.

I want to copy a piece of text that has some style attributes applied to it, for example a different colour, bold, larger than normal text size, etc, and paste it into the middle of a paragraph and have it retain the original styling. If I use control V to paste it in, it is pasted in the style of the paragraph it is being pasted into. If I use Paste and Match style, it still does the same thing. If I paste it in a separate paragraph then it does retain the original styling, but that is not what I am trying to do. The only work around I have found is once I have pasted it is to reselect the original text, click Copy Style, and then select the recently pasted text and click Paste Style. But this is such a long winded way of going about it and prone to errors. What am I missing here?

You can select plain text in the same paragraph style (e.g. body) and copy/paste that selection style into the recipient paragraph style. Although that too will change the recipient paragraph to the originating paragraph style, it will go unnoticed.

Just because you believe this seems like a very basic thing, doesn't mean that it is a bug, or that Pages was designed to do what you want. You can however, provide direct feedback to the Pages product team from the application menu:

Well that's the problem, that doesn't work for me. If I do as you say, copy a word using Format/Copy Style, place the cursor in the middle of a paragraph with white space either side, and use Format/Paste Style, it turns the whole paragraph into the style of the copied word and does not paste the word. I want to be able to copy a word or phrase and paste it within another paragraph while retaining it's styling. Perhaps it's just not possible. Pages is an amazing app, I love it, so I'm not complaining!

Well that's what I've been saying!

So are you saying what I want to do can't be done? That you can't paste a word within a paragraph and keep the style of the copied text? There is very little that Pages doesn't do, but that seems a weird omission and something every other app I have ever used does - InDesign, Word, Affinity Publisher, Affinity Designer...

Is there a system whereby I can make a feature request or report it as a bug? It seems such a very basic thing, it must be a bug.

VikingOSX has emailed me with a reply to the above but for some reason it hasn't shown up here. Anyway, just wanted to say thank you to him/her for taking the care to reply. I really am a huge fan of Apple and of Pages, and I'll stop hunting for a solution now I know there isn't one. I found out over the last few weeks that with enough searching it has been able to do anything I want, so I was surprised when I couldn't do something as simple as this So was asking for help to see what I was doing wrong. However, it's no biggie, I'll stop looking for a solution now I know there isn't one. Thanks again.
