Mac Mini M4 Running Warm...

I just got a Mac Mini M4 several months ago (running 15.3.1), updating from a late 2015 iMac. I've noticed that it runs pretty warm (140º and up, according to CleanMyMac X), even when it's asleep. I never hear the fans come on, so, wondering if the fans were faulty, I installed and configured "Macs Fan Control", which seems to do a good job of controlling the fans to keep the Mac cool (currently 106º) while the Mini is in use.

However, I rarely shut the mini down, and it will get warm to the touch while sleeping even with all users (me, my wife, and my son) logged out.

My concern is that the excessive heat will shorten the Mini's components. When I log back in, MFC will show the temp up around 165º and activate the fans full-blast.

Is this normal? Am I just being overly concerned? If it isn't normal, what should I do? I'm not the best with Activity Monitor, but can follow directions.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm trying them now (I've been away for a bit, so haven't had a chance). Just FYI, when I woke the Mini this morning, it was 159º. As soon as I started up, Macs Fan Control activated and brought the temperature down to 106º. I grabbed a screenshot as the temp was dropping...

Computer Sleep is broken. The Fan stops, but there are still active processes that are causing it to heat up.

Just wondering, why is CMM bad news? Are there any articles you can point to? I've used it for years on several machines w/out issue. Not doubting you. but would like more info.

There are hundreds if not thousands of reports of CMM issues here in the ASC.

Automatic Computer Sleep Mode is a problem for some setups.

As a test:

Turn On "Prevent automatic sleeping when display is off"

Set "Turn display off when inactive" to 5 or 10 minutes

Leave the Mac Mini On and only allow the display(s) to turn Off

Do not manually select Sleep from the Drop Down menu

Shut Down when your away for a day or more

---------

Also CleanMyMac is bad news and should be uninstalled as per the developers instructions.

CMM is bad news because it has a long history of modifying Mac OS and causing it to be unstable, cause crashes, and create very odd behaviors. In return it does absolutely NOTHING that Mac OS does not already do which makes it at best worthless. Mac OS does not require nor benefit in any way by adding the following types of third party apps:

  • Antivirus
  • Security
  • Cleaning
  • VPN
  • Maintenance

All Mac OS needs in order to remain stable and secure is to simply keep it up-to-date and restart your computer about 1x per week.
