Apple Watch waking me up

I updated my Apple Watch 8 last week, and now it keeps waking me early in the morning, dinging and vibrating for no reason. Do not disturb makes no difference. How can I fix this? I like to use the watch to track my sleep, but now it’s wrecking my sleep.

Thanks for responding. The ding and vibration come with no notification. They just wake me up. I look at my watch, and there's nothing there.

Hello judithfromyork,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities.

Do these notifications appear to be coming from a certain app, or from an alarm? You may consider changing your notification settings, enabling a Focus, or changing your sleep schedule and alarm. The following Apple Support articles can help you change these settings on your Apple Watch.

Please reply back with more details if you need more help after this.

Cheers!

Hey there judithfromyork,

We'd like to help by learning more about what's happening, along with ruling out some basics:

  1. You mentioned the issue began the morning after installing an update, but the latest for your model would be watchOS 9.6. You can verify this within Settings > General > About. In case you needed it, this link shows how to update: Update your Apple Watch For your paired iPhone, the latest version is iOS 16.6. You can verify this within Settings > General > About. In case you needed it, this link shows how to first back up, then update: Update your iPhone or iPad
  2. Sometimes unexpected behavior can be resolved with a restart: Restart your iPhone and Restart your Apple Watch
  3. From the other response above we see you already checked your Focus/Do Not Disturb settings, so we wanted to ask if you've already checked if there's any alarm set up, or any app notification set not to your preference?

Cheers!

Thanks, Bruno75. I appreciate your detailed message. My watch is up to date since that update last week. I just updated my phone. (Not sure why it wasn’t up to date, since I have auto update on.) Since no visible notifications accompany the ding and vibrate, I wouldn’t know what to turn off in Notifications, but I just went in and turned off a lot of app notifications for apps from which I’ve never received notifications! I have no alarms set. Perhaps my phone update will cure the problem, though this recent OS seems to be designed to deal with security issues, not bugs like mine.

As for Focus/Do Not Disturb, I set that on my phone, not my watch. I don’t see where (if anywhere) to set it on the watch/watch app. The setting on my phone has—until recently—has applied to my watch, protected my sleep from noises and vibrations. That’s why the first ding was so surprising. And profoundly annoying.

Thanks again. I welcome any other suggestions.
