Apple Watch counting knitting as steps

I just realised my new Apple Watch is counting knitting as steps. (Argh). I found some comments from 2017 confirming this happens. Suggestions were to calibrate your watch (done) and to take it off when knitting (seriously?!) Are there any recent improvements to this issue/problem? I bought the thing to wear, not to take on and off constantly (and lose knowing me🙄). Thanks!

I feel you, Apple Watch is weird. I get exercise minutes for playing Mario Kart sometimes. (Apparently shaking my hands to do tricks counts as exercise?!) And then when I just swam 2,000 yards (even with 150 yards of butterfly) it says I only burned 250-something calories. …What. Is this.

I’m thinking instead of taking it off completely, you can just take it off, put it back on and leave it locked, or you can power it off. I hope Apple will fix this soon.
