Hello ateeeate,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities!

We want to help with Lean Spelling so you can get the most from Pages on your iPad.

Use these steps:

  • "Add a word: Tap the underlined word, then tap Learn Spelling (you may need to tap Replace first). The word is added to the dictionary used by Pages and other apps."

This Apple Support page has the full details under the 'Add and remove words from the the spelling dictionary' section: Check spelling in Pages on iPad - Apple Support

Try restarting your iPad if the issue remains.

We hope this helps quickly resolve the issue.

Cheers!

Thanks for getting back to us, ateeeate.

To be clear, there is no safe mode for iPadOS. To further troubleshoot your issue, make sure that all documents you have with Pages is saved. Then try removing the app and installing it again to see if you can get the options for "Learn Spelling": Remove apps from iPad - Apple Support

"Remove apps

Do any of the following:

  • Remove an app from the Home Screen: Touch and hold the app on the Home Screen, tap Remove App, then tap Remove from Home Screen to keep it in App Library, or tap Delete App to delete it from iPad.
  • Delete an app from App Library and Home Screen: Touch and hold the app in App Library, tap Delete App, then tap Delete. (See Find your apps in App Library on iPad.)

If you change your mind, you can redownload apps you’ve deleted."

If this doesn't resolve the issue, contact Apple Support for further help.

Best regards.

Thanks for letting us know that the option does not appear at all when following the steps we provided.

To help us further isolate the issue, we recommend seeing if the same behavior persists in safe mode. Safe mode does a couple of things for us, such as running a scan of your disk during startup and making repairs when it can. This by itself can often resolve a variety of issues. Once booted into safe mode, it also disables certain processes that might cause a conflict, which will help us narrow down where the issue is ultimately stemming from.

More information on safe mode, including how to boot to it, and how it can help us troubleshoot your issue, can be found here: How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support

Cheers.

I have been having a lot of problems with my iPad. Recently, as I’m typing, the suggested word appears and I click on it and then when I start typing the next word half of the suggested word I clicked on gets erased. It doesn’t appear that this iOS version 16.1 is trying to learn spelling about 50% of the time and is struggling in all other areas.

I also notice at the beginning of a sentence it’ll capitalize the first letter and then halfway through typing in the sentence. It changes the first letter to a lowercase. This is driving me mad that I have to go back and fix it. The spell learning is atrocious and it doesn’t seem to know when to capitalize and when not to.

This is my first Apple iOS experience and either this is the most buggiest operating system on the planet or there is something wrong with the hardware in my iPad.

Apple rewriting the iOS has only made matters worse. This happens with other browsers as well.

Hi, Thanks Matthew,

This actually reveals another issue.

I've never been able to find a way to knowingly save a Pages document on my ipad. I believe I've heard that there is a way but I've never found it. I do have documents that I've worked on and worked on again that continue to exist so I assume that in that respect they are saved (also I have no trouble duplicating and saving onto cloud or drive elsewhere) so if that is saving, I have saved, but I don't see anything that lets me know it has been saved if there is an actual procedure to saving a document.

Also, I am concerned that if I delete the Pages App on my ipad that the documents I've created will be gone. If that is not the case, where will they be? I am only skeptical because I know things occasionally happen that I never intended like if I delete something here, it gets deleted everywhere else also. Fortunately (though I don't recall for sure, since it was a long time ago) there seems to be a message saying if you do this it can't be undone. I have chosen long ago to never try it again since I don't like risking losing my work. I've managed working this way.

I am wondering, if Learn Spelling might just have been lost in the newest version of Pages. My Pages just updated itself on its own several days ago. I was not given an option to do it or do it now or do it later. If Learn Spelling might eventually be in the next version of Pages, might it just come back when it gets installed again? If that is the case, I can live with the squiggly red lines until then. I don't feel comfortable doing the above mentioned procedure. I mainly just type. I don't need special features and any words i want learned by the app are words I've invented so most of the time, words i want learned i keep in a separate dictionary elsewhere in a safe place.

I hope there are some answers to my questions above and or if waiting for the next update will resolve the issue. Thanks

Same issue for me. “Learn Spelling” function no longer available as of end of October. Still not showing up and I concur in the frustration when it comes to the frequent necessity of having to use the function to prevent my entire document from being flooded with red-underlined words.

Please implement Learn Spelling back into pages for iPad, Apple!

“learning new words in PAGES - it has stopped working. The facilty no longer appears in the selection options. “

This too was my issue especially since I am learning Italian and the facility is of huge importance to me in the development of a new vocabulary.

The solutions offered by the Apple Community Specialist did not work and I am fearful of reloading the app because I may lose more than three years of study. This has already happened once before when I loaded ‘Word’ documents to my then brand new IPad Air and Apple Support Team were unable to recover my files.

This current issue of not having the ability in “learning new words in PAGES” is very recent on my IPad Air and it is exactly same on my IPhone 13, so it cannot be simply a firmware/hardware defect.

PAGES 12.2 is the version I am using. However, when registering my complaint to the Apple community the highest version option in the drop down list was 12.1, does this mean that 12.2 has been removed by Apple??

I am a convert from Microsoft to IPad Air, and from Android to IPhone 13 so my disappointment with Apple is massive.

i would very much like to see “learning new words in PAGES” restored so I can continue to learn and study the beautiful Italiano language.
