Ads in iPhone apps ignore silent switch

Some ads in iPhone apps ignore the silent switch. That is bad enough but up until today those ads at least have had a mute button. Today got a ad for the app Viola's Quest: Marble Blast that not only ignored the silent switch but it also did not have a mute button so audio started blasting out with no way to stop the noise. Over time doesn't it seem like we get less and less control of our devices. Features of iOS that I like to use seem to disappear with each new major release.

But it does silence most apps and many ads so WTF? So when an ad comes on with high blasting audio and disturbs everyone around me I have to fumble for the volume down button and count how many steps down to zero so I can step back up to where the volume was before after the ad is done? Or if I don't want to disturb people around me I need to turn the volume all the way down and never hear any audio from the app? That's completely ridiculous. If they can't control the use of the silent switch they should just remove it so they can make even more profit of of us.

Applications may honor the ring/vibrate switch, but they are not required to. The Music and podcast apps, for example…

You can complain to the app developers, but especially if they are ad supported, it probably won’t do you much good.

The switch was never intended to completely silence the phone. It's there to mute notifications and the phone ringing.

If you also want to silence in app audio, turn the volume all the way down.

So I should file a bug report against each of the dozens of apps that I have noticed that they honor the silent switch? That's not something that Apple tests for to earn their 30% of app price?

So the answer is that the silent switch is useless and you just need to turn down the volume to zero.

The silent switch is not “useless”. It serves its intended purpose, which is to mute notification sounds. That’s all it was ever intended to do and it does that just fine.
