How can I fix videos that were corrupted when transferring from my iPhone to Macbook Pro?

I transferred videos from my iPhone to Macbook Pro (via cloud) so I could back them up on an external hard drive. Somewhere along the way, the videos I kept in my iPhoto on the my phone have become corrputed (messed up video and audio). Is there a way to fix this?

iPhone 12, iOS 17

If your videos became corrupted during the transfer from your iPhone to MacBook Pro, there are a few steps you can take to try and recover them:

  1. Try Different Software: Use video repair software. They can fix damaged files without significant quality loss.
  2. Re-download from iCloud: If your videos were stored in iCloud, try re-downloading them directly from iCloud.com or the Photos app. This might retrieve the original, uncorrupted files.
  3. Check Backup Options: If you have a backup from Time Machine or another backup solution, consider restoring the videos from there.
  4. Use a Dedicated App: Some apps like VLC can sometimes play partially corrupted videos, which may provide you access to the content while you seek repairs.

If these options don't work, contacting Apple Support might be helpful for further assistance. Good luck!

I'd try to re-import the movies from the iPhone via USB with /Applications/Image Capture.app, if possible.

Maybe the first transfer to the Macbook Pro somehow corrupted the movies? Or maybe the external drive was not formatted as APFS or MacOS Extended, and you could try to import that library from a not supported non-Mac format (exFAT etc) to the internal APFS volume and see if it fixes the issue? Or maybe there were movies with old obsolete movie and audio codecs that current (post-Mojave) Photos no longer supports? Or maybe the movies were shot in HDR which the current Mac or display just do not support? ...oh, so many questions...

The video images are somewhat kaleidoscopic in color. They look sepia toned with shifting colors throughout. The audio in a few is absent. I was using an older Macbook pro to which I transferred the videos to an external hard drive. I was having storage capacity issues, so once they transferred, I deleted them from the computer/cloud. There were some that I wanted to keep on my phone and when importing back into IPhoto on the computer/cloud/phone, I found around 400 videos like this. I was spot checking videos periodically through the transfer and didn’t notice any issues until after I deleted them. I haven’t tried re-transfering the videos via USB with /Applications/Image Capture.app. Are you recommending that I transfer the videos from the external hard drive, via USB, back to the computer using the /Applications/Image Capture.app.? I’ll check and see if that app is on my computer, it’s a 2022 Macbook Pro - I don’t know if it’s a standard feature or something I need to download.
