File sharing stopped working after macOS 13.7.5 update

File sharing stopped working after 13.7.5 update between 2 macs (both with 13.7.5).

Anyone with the same issue pls?

I am 100% sure it is the 13.7.5 fault, because it worked just before I ran the updates on both computers.

(Intel Macbook, I can't upgrade to macos 14)

Yes, I tried to disable file sharing, reset mac and enable it again :-)

Using finder click Go, then Connect to Server. Enter the following: smb://name of computer._smb._tcp.local/name of shared folder. Enter credentials of shared folder user and password and it worked. I don't know why, but this has been a real problem for the last 10 days. Hope this works for you too.

Thanks for the hint, this works for me to connect from an El Capitan MacBook Pro to a Ventura MacBook Air.

What's also odd with this bug:

In the file sharing info window in System Settings, the note "Other users can access shared folders on this computer, and administrators all volumes, at smb://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" displays a completely unrelated random IP address, not the standard 192.168.1.xxx from my LAN IP range.

I have two Macs on Ventura and one on Sonoma in my office. Ever since I updated the two Ventura Macs to 13.7.5 file sharing has stopped working between the two. However I can share files to the third running Sonoma 14.7.5.

I updated the Ventura Macs to 13.7.6 today in the hope this would fix a recognised problem but it hasn't. I can still file share to the Sonoma Mac from both Ventura Macs and connection is instant. But the Ventura machines cannot share between each other at all. The only way I can communicate between them is via screen sharing.

I find it very odd and frustrating that the fault is exactly the same in 13.7.6 as it was in 13.7.5. Generally I wait a while to run software updates and this is precisely the reason why.

Please Apple, let's get a fix for this. I have spent the best part of two days trawling the internet looking for answers - none of which work satisfactorily.

Thanks,

Rich :)

Perhaps you have something else going on as well?

Likely so, as I found out later on while attempting some other voodoo like Safe Boot, and then logging in using my "test" account where the URL was shown correctly as an smb://nameofmymac address.

You are not running Tailscale/Zerotier or something like that are you by any chance?

I have had no idea what those are, so not directly. :)

But my main account has a lot of custom stuff going on in the background.

There's also Little Snitch and Windscribe VPN running, but that affects all accounts.

Of course I also tried what happens if I disable them.

In any case, it appears that the culprit for the weird IP address display lies in my user account.

Still, the SMB file sharing issue is global.

Connecting from Ventura to El Capitan Macs works as usual, which is the main thing I need.

I'll keep on investigating…

Sooo…

For what it's worth:

Since I've been already at it with updating, I also just updated my spare Sonoma partition to 14.7.6 right now.

Lo and behold, connecting to this Mac from the outside via SMB is now only a matter of a click and a second, be it from any of my Macs or from an iPhone. And of course, I can then mount, browse and edit also the other volume – i.e. the one that would actually boot Ventura – without any issues.

So let me recap once again, the blame is solely on MacOS Ventura 13.7.5 and 13.7.6. Apple just screwed something with SMB there. Period.

So if your Mac can run Sonoma, possibly it's time to upgrade.

(Me, I'll have to make quite a few checks first, to make sure that all apps and external hardware that I need to use will continue to function under Sonoma. And I'm in no rush with that…)

Installed 13.7.6...it was a rocky install. During the install I got a black screen for a number of minutes, I almost powered off then back on, but didn't. It was a black screen that long that I considered it—it looked like no power was going to the computer. Then, after waiting a few more minutes, it went to my desktop, asking for my password. Entered that and within a minute or so a reboot was started (I didn't do that). Then the progress bar was very slow to complete, but it did, and got to my desktop again. Just for grins, I did another restart, this time the progress bar went at the normal speed. I checked the info of my shared folder and sharing was unchecked (again). A real adventure ensued getting the shared check box to stay checked. Lots of asking for my password, like 4 times in succession when trying to check the shared checkbox. "Unlocking" the padlock at the bottom of the get info screen didn't seem to make a difference, but eventually I got the box checked. My situation seems to be a bit different. I can access the external drive on my Ventura machine from my sequoia mac mini, see the files, open them, but I cannot search in the finder window, nor can I transfer files between the two machines—I get the error code 50. And to make things more confusing, I can access the external drive on my Ventura machine independent of whether the shared box on the external drive is checked or not.

So, on balance, I think 13.7.6 might be worse than 13.7.5. It made NOTHING better.

I suppose many are in my situation: I cannot upgrade to Sequoia on my Ventura machine because the hardware on the Ventura machine is not capable of running Sequoia, so if apple does nothing on this I either have to deal with this or buy another machine. Ugh.

I am going to try to reinstall 13.7.6 since a reinstall of 13.7.5 did make things normal, sometimes, until I had to reboot then function was lost.

This is a real screwup on Apple's part, unbecoming of the brand

Just as an aside, but germane, I linked to my MacPro 2010 from my iPhone 16 Pro via VLC to play music from the Mac Pro. Navigating to the folder I was asked for smb1 login which I input only to be told that it was incorrect (it wasn't). The only way out was to press 'Cancel', which returned with the same login request. After 3 such 'Cancel' attempts, access was granted, and this process continued unabated until I reached the desired sub folder.

I had no such problems with my ageing Android phone.
