File sharing stopped working after macOS 13.7.5 update

File sharing stopped working after 13.7.5 update between 2 macs (both with 13.7.5).

Anyone with the same issue pls?

I am 100% sure it is the 13.7.5 fault, because it worked just before I ran the updates on both computers.

(Intel Macbook, I can't upgrade to macos 14)

Yes, I tried to disable file sharing, reset mac and enable it again :-)

Using finder click Go, then Connect to Server. Enter the following: smb://name of computer._smb._tcp.local/name of shared folder. Enter credentials of shared folder user and password and it worked. I don't know why, but this has been a real problem for the last 10 days. Hope this works for you too.

Thanks for the hint, this works for me to connect from an El Capitan MacBook Pro to a Ventura MacBook Air.

What's also odd with this bug:

In the file sharing info window in System Settings, the note "Other users can access shared folders on this computer, and administrators all volumes, at smb://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" displays a completely unrelated random IP address, not the standard 192.168.1.xxx from my LAN IP range.

Thanks @rivmac!

This "smb://name of computer._smb._tcp.local/name of shared folder" method works for me also as a workaround, but what a thing for Apple to break!

Also, mounting shares via NFS also works if you get desperate to re-establish workflows and you really get stuck...

NFS Manager from Bresink Software is a nice GUI for NFS if you won't want to get down and dirty in Terminal.

Please Apple, can you pay some attention to this MAJOR bug and issue a patch ASAP!

Maybe. I attempted to reinstall Ventura a few weeks ago. Initially, file sharing functioned for a brief period, but it subsequently ceased working. I managed to create an alias that retained access to one folder and the user folder for file sharing purposes. However, if you select the standard icon in the sidebar for sharing, it would not be functional. Only the alias would work. Subsequently, I discovered the Top-ranking workaround posted by

StephenHarrington: In Connect to Server type in: “smb://name of computer._smb._tcp.local/name of shared folder.” Save these scripts in Connect to Server and create aliases for the mounted shared folders.

Screen sharing was always working through out

Just as another point of reference (and maybe not that helpful except as confirmation it’s a Ventura 13.7.5 Finder- related issue) …

On my test machine I cloned the “faulty” Ventura volume onto a fresh volume in the same container using the marvellous SuperDuper software

Immediately from my main 13.7.5 machine I was able to access the Shares on the Sequoia test machine “normally” through Finder sidebar entries again.

Have confirmed if I boot back into the Ventura volume on the test machine normal Sharing all goes away again of course …

I’m still holding out hope Apple will fix this and don’t just drop support for updates to Ventura at the upcoming WWDC announcements … that would leave us in a right pickle!

:-)

This is done via:

System Settings → General → Sharing → File Sharing "ⓘ" → + add your startup volume as a shared folder → + add yourself as a user with Read & Write priviledges

But…

The additional user is not "sticky", it seems to disappear upon reboot.

Also, while it works from Mac to Mac, it seems that it still doesn't work from iPhone to Mac.

I submitted a bug report. Before the update, I noticed the file sharing connection disappearing and reappearing, but after the update, it only worked with an alias of a shared folder. Your smb://name of computer trick worked perfectly. I created more aliases and now have some file sharing. All my Macs except for one on Ventura have file sharing working as expected.

I have the same problem with Ventura 13.7.5 running on a 2017 MacBook Pro.

I just updated to Ventura 13.7.6 and everything was fixed. I could again use the Finder on two different remote Macs to login to Ventura using all my Administrator and Standard user accounts.

I then rebooted Ventura 13.7.6 and all the original SMB problems with 13.7.5 are back.

What an emotional roller coaster after Apple broke, apparently fixed, and then somehow broke again such a basic system networking service.

I cannot upgrade to Sonoma so I am stuck with a seriously broken Ventura system.

I too have reported this problem to Apple via feedback.

Just to say, exactly the same thing here ('Vintage' iMac 18,3). No ideas yet. Printer sharing and Screen sharing working normally. M1 Macbook Air with Sequoia 15.4 sees the iMac in the Finder sidebar, but gives 'Connecting' for hours without an error message. Sequoia sharing to Ventura works perfectly, a temporary solution for me. Antique MacBook Pro with Catalina 10.15.7 also unable to connect to Ventura, though no problem before the update. Curiously, the option 'Allow full disk access for all users' is no longer available in Ventura, though still there in Sequoia.

I have the same problem but I can see and connect to my Mac Pro 2010 (but not the other way round except by shared alias folders), but not to the two 2017 iMacs or Sequoia Mac Book M2 on the home network. I can connect to the iMacs etc., via the alias shared folders on the desktops of the machines. When I open these, the drive appears and I can open that, but anything via the network facility just say 'connecting' and then 'loading' which soon disappears without populating the drive list. The Mac Pro can connect OK to the Mac Book, so it's solely a Ventura 13.7.5 problem.
