iMovie on iPad won't transition to a different photo

I am using iMovie version 3.0.5 on my iPad with iOS 18.2. I am trying to make a movie in iMovie. When I add multiple pictures, it will only show the first photo. It will not transition into the new picture in edit mode or just playing it from the project list. When I manually move the play line, it will transition, but when I hit the play button, it will not. I have added different types of transitions, deleted transitions, and it still will only show the first picture. I've never experienced this issue before. Is there something that needs to be updated in the app?

OK, so here is the issue.

If you are on 18.1.x, transitions work fine.

As soon as you move to 18.2.x, you will have issues with transitions.

I work as a tech in a middle school and have verified this is a 18.2.x issue. (We have over 600 ipads here)

I have reloaded iMovie, Reset all settings, wiped and reinstalled the IOS.

The ONLY work around I have found is that for some reason, if you place a video in your project, the transitions will work. If you place the video anywhere in the project, you get transitions. As soon as you take the video out, no transitions.

I have tried enabling/disabling the ken burns effect, putting images on the ipad vs using images in the student's icloud. It WILL not do transitions unless you pop a video in the project, and it doesn't matter where you put the video in, as long as you put a video in. It can be a super short video <1 sec and it works.

Yes I had the same issue just today (9 Feb 2025) when i tried editing a new movie. Previous movie project (done in Dec 2024) I edited was ok and able to transition normally between images. Tried to shut down and reboot my iPad already but it’s still the same.

Not sure whether is it an updated iPad iOS18.3 issue?

*Update* - I tried the same images on my iPhone13 ProMax with the iMovie and it is able to work perfectly normal as usual! In editing mode, when clicked PLAY, the images transited normally. But i noticed my iPhone is iOS18.1.1… not yet updated to the latest iOS18.3. So maybe that is a probable issue?
