H&R Block tax software 2024 using MacBook Air Big Sur macOS 11

I want to purchase H&R Block tax software 2024 for my MacBook Air (early 2014) but H&R Block technical specifications indicate mac OS 12 or higher is required. The MacBook Air (early 2014) cannot be upgraded past Big Sur (macOS 11, version 11.7.10). I am curious if anyone has successfully downloaded and used the H&R Block tax software for 2024 with a MacBook Air supporting Big Sur (macOS 11). For a few years, I successfully downloaded and used H&R Block tax software onto my desktop Mac supporting High Sierra (macOS 10.13) when the H&R Block requirements stated Catalina (MacOS 10.15) or newer was needed. I am hoping to have the same luck with my MacBook Air (early 2014) supporting Big Sur (macOS 11). Who wants to be the guinea pig this year?

I transferred the software from my iMac to my MacBook Pro running macOS Big Sur 11.7.10, and it worked fine despite receiving a message stating that the software was designed for macOS 12 for optimal performance. I clicked "Continue" and proceeded with the installation without issues. You shouldn't face any problems with yours either. I successfully completed my taxes, submitted them, and they were ACCEPTED by the IRS.

While it is true the page for the 2024 tax software mentions macOS 12 as a minimum requirement, the H&R Block Help Center says otherwise. When I downloaded the 2024 tax software to my MacBook Air (also using Big Sur macOS 11), I saw a message that said it might perform better with a newer operating system. I was able to complete a trial tax return without any issues but I am not ready to submit it yet because my tax return is complicated. I wish I could be of more help today. Maybe ask H&R Block for advice considering they mention only Mac OS X 10.15.7 or higher is needed on their Help Center>Software>Technical page.

Mac:

  • Operating system: Mac OS® X 10.15.7 or higher.
  • Browser: Safari® 15.6.1 or higher

This worked for me tonight, so make that three. When I first hit send nothing happened, so I backed up and reviewed previous page, then came back to the submit page and hit send once again. Off it went… whoosh! I got a federal acceptance literally 3 minutes later. Still waiting for state acknowledgment.

I really appreciate everyone posting their success with the latest iteration of Big Sur 11.7.10. I tried using TurboTax on iPad, but I much prefer doing taxes on computer and my trusty 2013MBP isn’t able to run sys 12. I decided to take a chance after reading this thread and downloaded Deluxe. It worked fine. ( I did encounter a few odd things about the program’s content, but they had nothing to do with the operating system.)

I opened my saved tax return. I made some changes. I saved it before closing the application. I reopened the saved tax return. It kept all of the saved changes. Whenever I open the app, I get the message something along the lines of the software was designed for macOS 12 to get an optimized experience. I have the option to continue or cancel. I always choose continue. I can get to the point of submitting but it isn't accurate yet. I truly wish my tax return was finished so I could try submitting it! Perhaps you should reinstall the H&R Block tax software. I would think you should be able to get as far as I got. My macOS 11 Big Sur is using version 11.7.10. Let me know how it goes.

@orlandozig I switched to H&R three yrs ago when TT was no longer compatible with my Mac (which I think back then was running high Sierra) H&R is simpler but equally efficient (and I didn’t miss those dumb TT videos) but their “help” is kind of pathetic, especially for state. I don’t mind e-filing, but didn’t want to calculate the whole return online, so I worried this might be the year I’d be “forced” to update my MBP. Decided to try the iPad version of TT and it was okay, but kind of awkward to use even with a Bluetooth keyboard. Ironically, having already almost finished when I saw these posts, I ordered the software and continued entering both returns. I had one complicated thing that H&R wasn’t very clear about so I wanted to see how TT instructed me to enter it and subsequently adjust state. All in all, the calculations came within a few dollars, so I guess I did it correctly. Using both programs also helped me notice an entry error (missing decimal!) that might have cost me a thousand dollars more in tax. It took awhile to track it down, and I can’t say I enjoyed doing my taxes twice, but it was helpful to compare the two. The TT didn’t have one form I needed so it forced an upsell to premium, whereas H&R Deluxe was fine. TT would have ended up costing approx 3x more for software, had I filed with them. So, all in all, the H&R experience was a positive one. Fed accepted in minutes and State was accepted within three hours. Let’s hope the refunds are speedy! I doubt we will get another year out of our vintage Macs, but it’s definitely worth trying! I did notice online that all the ads to buy 2024 insisted on os 12, but the help file on the H&R site did not, so I figured that discrepancy would likely get me a refund if it didn’t work. As mentioned here, the warning in the software said the experience would be better with 12, but it did not indicate Big Sur was incompatible. Glad we took a chance! Thanks again … see you in 2026 :)

@artwire - thanks so much for posting and being a part of our newly formed "H&R Block Tax Software for Old Macs Guinea Pig Team" - "Go, Old Macs, Go!" Lol. I'll continue being on the team for as long as possible and I'll post what happens with next year's H&R Block tax software! And, by the way, I have submitted three tax returns so far (for family members). Mine will be last because it's complicated but I am 100% confident that it will transmit successfully!

@artwire - just an update - I was able to successfully upload my personal tax return the other night and it was accepted by the IRS within minutes of the upload. Yippee! I owe taxes this year so I won't be getting a refund (boo hoo). On a positive note, I am officially done preparing 2024 tax returns for my family and myself. Woo hoo! Let's hope we can get a few more tax returns prepared using the H&R Block tax software with our old MacBooks!

@artwire -

Excellent write-up. It will no doubt be helpful for others as well! I also liked the fact that the help file on the H&R site says "Mac OS® X 10.15.7 or higher" - it provides additional support for a refund if needed! It's the main reason I was willing to buy the H&R Block tax software for my old MacBook Air! Hopefully, that page will say the same thing next year. I love the H&R Block tax software so I hope I can use it with my old MacBook Air next year. Fingers crossed!
