Why won't my hearing test start on my iPad and AirPods?

I have an iPad 7th generation with 18.2 on it. I have airPods Pro 2 with firmware 7B21. When I try and run the hearing test, all the set steps proceed ok. When I get to the final step and hit the "start test", the screen flashes and I'm back to the home screen. Sometimes, if I attempt to start another test, I'll get a message that another test is already running and that I should go to "preferences" to finish or end it. I'm stuck!!
