AirPods Pro 2 hearing test cannot connect to AirPods Pro 2

Brand new AirPods Pro 2. Firmware us update to the latest. iPhone 14 Pro Max, also on latest iOS18.1.

My AirPods Pro 2 are working fine with everything, except when I try to run the hearing test, it asks the question about age, current allergies, recent loud sound exposure, then gives me a blue button to tap. It sits and spins for a minute or so then pops up a window that it cannot connect to AirPods, place them back in case and put them back in my ears.

That accomplishes nothing. I’ve rebooted my phone.

I also have (allegedly) up-to-date AirPods Pro 2 with current firmware but cannot find the hearing test. Not anywhere. My charge is "only" at 78%. I'll try charging to 100% and the familiar reboot.

I have found the solution! Stop buying AirPods…. I have a 15 Pro Max. I had to forget and pair every time I wanted to use them. Now I can no longer do that. They connect and don’t work. Or if they do work, I can’t use them with YouTube because the video will freeze and spin until I take them back out. An old pair of soundcore earbuds I picked up cheap are more reliable. Maybe try some raycons next. Both have entirely better battery.

Reading about this issue everywhere for years, Apple knows, but they obviously don’t care.

edit: it did work for a while when I turned off automatic ear detection. Maybe try that!

Go to Settings>Bluetooth>AirPods 2 Pro (I've renamed mine as I have multiple pairs)> Tap on the i in the circle next to the word 'Connected'. Next, under HEARING HEALTH, you'll see 'Take a Hearing Test' in blue letters. Tap on that, then tap Get Started on the pop-up screen.

My problem is, once I put in my answers on the first screen for over 18 and no sinus issues, it wouldn't let me move on to the next screen. So odd, Apple has been touting this feature for months, but I've yet to find anyone who has actually managed to take the test successfully. I wonder if there's something more I need to do. Can't recall if I've updated the new (or my old ones) AirPods Pros since buying. Got the new ones in late Sept. '24 @Costco.

An important bit of info regarding this frustrating mess from a buyer's review on Amazon:

Model A3047, A3048 and A3049 are 2nd Generation with USB-C port and are the latest release

Model A2931, A2699 and A2698 are also 2nd Gen with but have a lighting charge port like the older models.

I have another refurbished set coming today; if same issue, I'm done with these.

I received this today for Christmas. I was totally surprised and happy to receive this and even more so when I found I could hear better while wearing them. My amazing SIL set everything up and all went well until we did the hearing test. I tried EVERYthing--changed each pod cover size-double checked the firmware, model, software versions etc., etc., on my iPhone 16 + and 2019 Macbook Pro. Repeatedly. Forgot this device, etc., etc., etc. Now I've cleaned them again, put the smallest sized tips on--I have a small head---to no avail. OFC now the pods are staying forgotten and don't seem to be able to become unforgotten. Shoot! I so want the hearing aid function! This is really pretty darned bad, Apple!

This is really pretty darned bad, Apple! - It's a couple hours later. I tried again a few times. Finally, I laid my head back onto my pillow on the bed while trying to take the test. The 2nd time, it worked! I took the test - and am now using my iPods as hearing aids. I've learned I can't use both the hearing aid function and the others with my phone and Macbook at the same time, so have to take the time to get used to both and switching back and forth.

Michael -- and other (attempted) users: these allegedly "hearing aid" AirPods are ridiculous.

While I managed to get thru all the hearing aid tests and have the most up-to-date OS, they simply don't work as I expected. Used them tonight in a normal volume -- not LOUD (and I am very sensitive to restaurant noise) --restaurant and they were great at silencing the entire space for me, but they really didn't make an appreciable difference in my conversation two friends.

Going to take them to Apple store Genius Bar but fear they will wind up returned.

Now I have new issues- it’s telling me my AirPods Pro 2 need to be cleaned. I do, based on the instructions it links to.

it then says to put back in case for it to run diagnostics and to try again after a few minutes.

still says to clean them… OR it tells me it cannot establish connection (despite every other feature working).
