Apple AI & iPhone SE

The latest iOS 18 update relates to AI.

I own an iPhone SE. This device is not listed by Apple as supporting Apple AI or this iOS 18 update in particular.

I'm very relieved. I don't support AI and don't want it anywhere near me or my phone. AI makes my skin crawl. I have Siri disabled and always will have.

However, this AI update begs the following questions for iPhone SE users:-

  1. If I update will my SE be burdened with over a GB of useless AI code?
  2. If this code is forced onto my SE by the update how can I delete it?
  3. Will Apple provide a separate update for iPhone SE owners, and any other Apple device owner who ethically and logically utterly opposes AI?
  4. Can I download and instal only the bug fixes and security updates relevant to my Apple device?

NB. I don't want to enter into any debates about AI here or anywhere. If you support AI don't waste your time trying to persuade me to agree with you. I won't. Ever.

Please only respond to this request if you can help me to keep my SE device completely free of AI whilst still updating bug fixes and security etc.

Thank you.

Thank you KiltedTim.

Re:

  1. Are you certain about that? In "Settings - Software Update", on my SE the iOS 18.2 update size which my phone will download if I update is 1.74GB. This is identical to the 1.74GB download size my friend is shown on her iPhone 16. Please reference your Apple sources from where you obtained your certainty that an SE won't download and instal exactly the same file as any other iPhone. I don't doubt the veracity of your claim I simply want access to the same reference source.
  2. I looked for information from Apple about how the download and instal process works but was unable to find any detailed information. Please reference your Apple source for this so I can be certain none of the code which the SE cannot execute is installed. The iOS is already taking up a lot of memory, (far more than I use for apps and data), so I don't want it bloating any further with what would be redundant code on an SE.
  3. The reason Apple should provide their customers with an AI opt-out is simply because not every customer owns an SE. My friend with the iPhone 16 also wishes to opt-out completely from AI. All my work colleagues and all of our clients also want a firewall between ourselves and AI. Rather than being forced to download and instal AI then hope it's disabled if that option exists, it would be far better not to have AI forced on you to begin with. Eg Why should someone who chooses to buy a 100% electric car be forced to have a petrol engine in it which they can disable?
  4. Again, please reference the Apple source which explains how devices select which elements of an update download are installed per Apple device. Whilst it's true that an SE cannot execute most of the new AI code, it can unfortunately run Siri which is AI. It needs to use iCloud significantly for this but can nonetheless do so unless it's disabled. I want to be able to delete Siri completely like an app and never download anything relating to it.

I don't doubt your certainty about how an SE will handle the download and instal process, I simply want to access the same source material you gained your certainty from. Thanks.
