Keeping Apple Intelligence Disabled

I’ve never really been interested in Apple Intelligence or Siri and have had both features turned off since their inception.

Starting with the 18.3 update it seems Apple is trying to force things. Apple Intelligence is forced back on with each update, and I get a notification to finish setting up my phone by setting up Siri. I’ve had an iPhone since the 3GS and pretty sure I’m finished setting up my phone how I want it.

I get that a lot of people like Siri and AI but I don’t. Can Apple at least respect my decision to disable those features and not keep trying to force them back to enabled after each update?

No, it turned on again with the 18.3.1 update I did this morning. After I had already turned it off after doing the 18.3 update when that came out.

Tell Apple. You haven't done so by posting here. This is a user to user only forum, which Apple doesn't participate, nor read for user feedback. You can use this link --> Feedback - macOS - Apple

Then I'd recommend you contact Apple Support. It was my understanding that after the iOS 18.3 update, if you turned it off, it would stay off. I can't validate that, as I actually use and enjoy Apple Intelligence.

Well the response from Apple Support is that there is no way to disable Apple Intelligence permanently and they can’t guarantee future updates won’t continue turning it on. Oh well, at least we all know now.

Yep, now you know. Maybe give the features a try. You might not dislike it. Artificial Intelligence has been part of our lives for a long time now. Siri, is AI. Amazon Alexa, is AI. Our phones have used machine learning for the last few years. If you really want to avoid AI, you'll need to go back to a dumb flip phone, or no phone at all. All manufacturers are embracing AI. At least the way Apple is doing it is relying on "on-device" processing as opposed to how others are doing it, by forcing you to use external servers.

Cool, thanks for the suggestions. I have tried out AI, digital assistants, LLMs, etc over the years and have yet to find anything useful, novel, or intelligent about any of it.  Maybe one day it will interest me, or maybe one day I will go back to using a flip phone like you suggested.

All I’m asking is to be able to configure basic settings and use the phone that I bought in a way that I choose, not in a way that Apple chooses for me. This does not seem like too much to ask for.

The thing is Apple owns iOS, not us. And Apple Intelligence for capable phones is now a built in feature. We can't pick and choose what Apple installs on our phones. We don't really have to use what we don't want to use, but we can't remove what is built into iOS.
