What horrors do I need to watch for on the latest OS upgrade?

I’m so annoyed. I deliberately didn’t upgrade my iPhone 14 because I didn’t want the AI slop on it, but I woke up this morning to find my iPad Pro which is a year older has been sloppified. I’ve turned Apple Intelligence off but are there any horrors like what they did to photos last time awaiting me and any tips and workarounds.

I’ve had an iPhone since about the second one out and bought an iPad on launch day - remember when we used to look forwards to updates? Now it’s like “how can I fix this mess?”

Hello Pgallon311,

Just FYI, the iPhone 14 does not support Apple Intelligence, so any AI features would not be available anyways. You can always disable Apple Intelligence (as you did with your iPad Pro). I included links here to the latest iOS and iPadOS updates. These are some of the "breaking" changes (namely, big changes) in the latest OS:

  • The Photos app has indeed been redesigned
  • The Mail app has been redesigned as well, although Apple has kindly provided the option to revert back to the original layout (select the three dots in the top left in Mail and choose List View)
  • Control Center has been redesigned, allowing for customization of the location of controls, although nothing unfamiliar
  • New Passwords app to replace the previous location of passwords in Settings
  • Redesigned Calculator app with support for Math Notes (write out handwritten equations and receive results in your handwriting)
  • Introduction of Apple Intelligence with complete freedom to opt-out

While I wouldn't label any of these as "horrors" necessarily, these are notable changes that can certainly take away from the general familiarity with iOS and iPadOS. There are several ways to provide feedback directly to Apple if needed, including here: Product Feedback - Apple. Or, if you decide to test beta versions of an OS on a non-primary device, you can provide feedback here: Bug Reporting - Apple Developer.

Have a nice day!

@Pgallon,

You are correct that designers should consider simplifying complex user interfaces rather than adding complexity to them. As a software developer and designer myself, I consider Jony Ive's words with great importance: "True simplicity is derived from so much more than just the absence of clutter and ornamentation; it’s about bringing order to complexity." These words meant a lot to Apple when Jony Ive worked for them.

Perhaps it is the absence of Jony Ive that has led some of Apple's redesigns towards greater complexity rather than simplicity. From my perspective, the Photos app redesign was led by a desire to simplify the look of the interface, but missed out on the key concept of "true simplicity" since many of the menus and actions are only accessible through horizontal scroll views. In terms of looks, the new Photos app is beautiful, but is it useful?

As you know, this is a forum of Apple users communicating with other Apple users, so while we can discuss this, the best way to communicate your design intents is still directly to Apple (through the links I provided).

Please know that I understand your position.

Have a nice day!

Yes I found the issue with Mail and reverted it although it’s still got those over large icons using up too much of the screen.

Now I’m not a fool and do know that we are the product and not the customer in the modern tech world, but does no-one train in user interface design anymore? The first thing I learnt was that you find out what users do the most and make it the simplest thing with the least number of actions to achieve it.
