Here are a few steps to work though from Apple's official Face ID troubleshooting article.

Check for updates

    • Update your iPhone or iPad to the latest version of iOS or iPadOS.
    • Make sure your device supports Face ID.

Check your Face ID settings

    • Go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode.
    • Ensure Face ID is set up and the features you're using it with are turned on.

Check the TrueDepth camera

    • Remove any smudges, cases, or screen protectors covering the TrueDepth camera.
    • Make sure your finger or palm isn't blocking the camera when using the iPad in landscape mode.

Make sure your face isn't blocked

    • Ensure your eyes, nose, and mouth are fully visible to the TrueDepth camera.
    • Face ID might not work if you're wearing a mask or sunglasses that block infrared light.

Face the TrueDepth camera

    • For iPhone 13 or later (iOS 16+), Face ID works in portrait and landscape.
    • For earlier iPhone models, Face ID only works in portrait orientation.
    • Make sure your device is 10-20 inches from your face.

Restart your device

    • Restart your iPhone or iPad and enter your passcode.
    • Try using Face ID again.

Add an alternate appearance

    • Set up an alternate appearance if your look changes significantly.

Reset Face ID

    • Go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Reset Face ID.
    • Set up Face ID again.
