After I installed the last update (Monterey 12.7.6) mail stopped playing a sound, when I send an email, or receive one. I increased the "sound" in system preferences to 100%, changed the chosen sound, and I there's still no sound from email.

I turned off my computer and when I chose the alert sound I heard it! I hope it fixed all the sound problems!

No, and I noticed that there is no sound when I send a text or click "save" in a Word document, for example.
I believe there is something wrong with the internal speakers. I wonder if I the problem would be resolved if I shut down my laptop. I'm just concerned because I have important documents, texts and emails I cannot risk losing.
My external drive is not always plugged in, given that I move my laptop, so trying to restore anything would not work.

No, I have not done anything except try to fix the volume is System Preferences. My MacBook Air is a 2017, so apparently it's an Intel-based. I clicked on the link Reset the SMC of your Mac and it suggests restarting the computer or shutting it off. I did restart it with no results, so I will turn it off, hoping that this will resolve the problems.
I hope I can find this link to let you know if I was successful in fixing the issues.
