CarPlay not working with iPhone 16 Pro

I upgraded my iPhone 12 Pro to a 16 Pro, and the new phone will not connect to my 2018 Mazda CX-5 with CarPlay. When I plug it in, it charges but makes no sign of connecting.

I got the answer (hopefully)!

I had the same issue. I drive a 2021 Mazda CX30 and I upgraded to the iPhone Pro 16 Max and the phone wouldn’t connect to Carplay. I saw it was a problem everywhere online so I had given up. I decided to look on Youtube and I found a guy sharing the gospel. Apparently, there are TWO types of USBC cables made. One for charging and one for Data sharing (that also charges). Find a cable that says it’s for data sharing in the description of the product and you got it! I bought a USB to USBC cable a Target for like $6.

Beyond frustrated is an understatement. I loved my 11 pro max but it wouldn’t allow the iOS update as it was too old so that meant none of my work apps would update and nor other vital ones I use daily so began glitching. This is what happened to my son’s iPads they work but as a marketing ploy they force you into purchasing new upgrades. This will be my last apple purchase. I have an older toyota that doesn’t have apple carplay. I use and have always used usb and audio cords and jacks. Since this problem Ive spent more money on a whole bunch of new cords and jacks. Everything else comes through fine, Spotify, GPS, even Siri responds to me, but calls I can hear them but they can’t hear me so have to stuff around with loudspeaker options. This means pulling over each time a call comes which is annoying AF. I’ve tried ear buds but that’s even more of a stuff around in answering and selecting options in order to hear. I have been through 5 apple technicians, a supervisor and I went in store today and no one could help me. I was told by the staff member that it would be escalated this afternoon via phone to a “second escalation” this means that someone who is higher above the in-store techs, (those who encounter these issues and are the ones who write the codes for bug improvements and such to go with the new iOS updates) would be the ones to help me. I truly thought I’d get somewhere but unfortunately the staff member lied and I just had a basic tech call me who did all the diagnostics which everyone I’d already spoken to had done. The supervisor then got on the phone and after almost 2 hours with the tech and supervisor, I was told my car stereo was not compatible and in fact I was told all the older stereos are obsolete with this new tech and I needed CarPlay. Why wasn’t this advertised properly with apple when I purchased the phone? I had saved my money to buy this disaster and can’t get a refund because I got it from a major hifi retailer with my iPhone 11 trade in, instead of the Apple Store. They will send me on a hamster wheel saying it’s an Apple issue and Apple will direct me back to them. I’m so mad that this has happened. I feel like contacting the telecommunications ombudsman. It’s absolutely disgusting from Apple. Am I supposed to upgrade my car now just to safely use my phone? RIDICULOUS. I’m looking at CarPlay stereos now, isn’t that crazy? That will be another $500 with installation easy, and by the looks of the CarPlay issues you guys are having with the iPhone 16 I’m worried that it may not even work then. Shame on you Apple this is a whole lot of BS.

I want to thank the person who recommended using a belkin charger to make Car Play function on 2018 cars with an Iphone 16. It worked! I don't know why apple is not creating a proper connector so that we don't all go crazy trying to figure out how to update firmware on our cars--NOT NECESSARY.

Car Play is immediately recognized by your phone when you use a Belkin connector!

Hi I have an Audi tt with an aftermarket head unit. I just got a 16pro max got an over current message after using a usbc- usb adapter and now nothing works. It still sees the phone and charges but no apple car play stopped working. Wired only. I’ve gone through the comments I’ve changed settings I’ve reset my phone and factory reset the head unit I’ve changed wires, is it possible that the pioneer head unit just isn’t compatible with the phone :/

Sorry if this is mentioned elsewhere, but I don't have time to read through 13 pages of comments. I did what ZecaHouston recommended, and then a message came up regarding my Siri not being enabled. Once I set up Siri on my new iPhone 16 Pro, my Carplay suddenly decided to work. This is something to try if you are very frustrated and disappointed with your tech situation.

I was actually on YouTube and red through a lot of comments, bc other people were still saying there’s wouldn’t work even with a lightning cord. Even though the short cord worked, I ended up ordering a dongle from ottocast to make mine wireless and to me, it’s worth the money, seeing as after using the short cord, I still had to go through the process of reconnecting every time, now I don’t.
