CarPlay not working with iPhone 16 Pro
I upgraded my iPhone 12 Pro to a 16 Pro, and the new phone will not connect to my 2018 Mazda CX-5 with CarPlay. When I plug it in, it charges but makes no sign of connecting.

I had the same frustration after upgrading to iPhone 16. I tried all the suggestions below and checked all the settings to no avail. I was using the original Apple Lightning to USB Cable with Apple USB-C to Lightning Adapter, but that would not even maintain charging. Came across a thread that said the issue was the cable. I purchased an "Anker Car Carplay Cable for iPhone 15/16/16 Pro Max/Plus, USB A to USB C Flow Cable" and the problem was solved. Phone now connects quickly and maintains the connection.
Bought a USB-C to USB-A to use in my Skoda car. The cable would be with data transfer and not just charging according to specification. Only charging, nothing else worked...
Bought another cable, different make, quite cheap. Everything works!
I solved the problem. Buy a Nimble USB-A to USB-C cord. The Apple adapter does not work, because the old USB-A to lightning cords do not work. I suspect because they cannot support the same wattage. Since I changed the cord without the adapter, it has not disconnected. I upgraded from an iPhone 12 Pro Max to a 16 Pro Max.
No you’re incorrect. The adapter does work. MANY of us have used it and very successfully solved the problem. You should not equate your own failure by suggesting that unequivocally the Apple adapter doesn’t work.
Upgraded to 16 pro from 14 pro - CarPlay is now super laggy, have re-paired multiple times hoping it gets better but it never does - now every time I get in it takes minutes to connect and once it does everything is slow - connecting to a BMW i3
OK.... I have been checking this thread often and have tried just about every suggestion without any success. Three days ago I finally saw one that mentioned resetting your car stereo. I went a step further and reset my phone and my car stereo at the same time. For the last three days it has worked without any problems. Does not need to be plugged in, doesn't need to be repaired each time I get in the car...it just works like it use to!!!! Good luck!
I HAVE A SOLUTION!!!! If your car works with the original iPhone cord, get an adapter that makes it USB-C and that’ll fix it. I tried for over a week to fix my car or phone and I got an adapter for the iPhone cord and CarPlay immediately worked!!!!!
I got it to work!! I changed the settings first and then went and tried a few different cables it ended up being the main cable I was trying with was the issue as well! Seems like you need to use a good quality cable that supports better data transfer?
Have you tried going into Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions, and turned it on? That's fixed it for a lot a people. But you might have something in those settings specifically disallowing Music.
What the **** are you talking about? I wasn’t having an issue to begin with??? Were you in my car? I’ve had my vehicle for 5 years, consistently used Appleplay and never had an issue until upgrading to Iphone 16. I’m not saying anything different than many others in terms of issues. I had to get a completely different type of cord than I’ve ever had to use with my car. And Apple doesn’t get “forced” to do anything. They do what they want. Money talks. Why are you even on this thread? You apparently don’t have these issues. Nothing better to do?
I wasn’t asked this. Since you want to troll responses and act like you have all the answers and know what is happening with everyone, I’ll reiterate what others are saying: some of us aren’t even getting the option to set it up. Not all cars have Apple play that connects with Bluetooth. I can only use it when my phone is plugged in.
For most people, this was not the issue. I asked this question before I figured it out that you need a cord that has data and charging not just charging. It does not have to be Apple, but it does have to have a data availability. The simple cheap one I was using Didn't work. I just had to change the cord. I tried the privacy settings and that didn't help.
Last week I replaced my iPhone 12 with a new iPhone 16 Pro and the Apple Car Play in my 2017 Honda Civic would not acknowledge the new device when I plugged it in. I tried two different cords, both of which were data (not just charging) but neither one worked. I followed the "9 Ways to Fix Apple CarPlay" instructions, stopping just short of doing a complete reset of my car's electronics. Nothing worked. Finally, I decided to try the cord someone had recommended here: "Belkin BoostCharge Braided USB-C to USB-A Cord (1M/3.3ft) for iPhone 16 Series". When I plugged the phone in using this cord, my car's system promptly connected to the device and my CarPlay was back! That was $10.49 well spent!! Thank you @RibGuy7! I tried all the other trouble shooting on this thread and wasn’t confident this would work after all the other failures with my Ford Edge 2017 CarPlay. Just bought one from Best Buy that transfers data and it works perfectly! Thanks again!
I’m using a wired CarPlay connection and this solved the problem for me. A marketplace search for “iPhone 16 CarPlay cable” brings up the right products. I did also perform a reset on my receive (Pioneer AVH-1550 NEX) before getting the cable but that did not solve the problem. However, can’t be sure if the cable alone is the solution or if a reset is also required. I was unable to remove old CarPlay connections from my phone and other troubleshooting steps recommended in this thread on the phone did not help me.
