iTunes 12.13.3.2 Crashing During iPhone 14 Restore on Windows 11 Pro

I’m experiencing a frustrating issue with iTunes version 12.13.3.2 on my Windows 11 Pro machine. Every time I try to restore my iPhone 14 (currently on iOS 17.x), iTunes crashes midway through the process. The application becomes unresponsive, and the restore fails. My iPhone also remains with logo and progress bar in midway. Here are a few key details:

  • iTunes Version: 12.13.3.2
  • OS: Windows 11 Pro (64-bit)
  • iPhone Model: iPhone 14
  • iOS Version: iOS 17.x

I’ve already tried the following troubleshooting steps:

  1. Reinstalled iTunes.
  2. Ensured that both iTunes and iOS are up to date.
  3. Restarted my PC and iPhone in recovery mode.
  4. Tried using different USB cables and ports.

Unfortunately, none of these have worked. Has anyone else encountered this issue, or is there a known fix? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Wow. A big time "THANK YOU" to @janfromfarum for posting a solution to iTunes crashing while updating iPhone.

Some details of my experience, in case it helps someone:

iTunes crashed for me in Windows 11 in the "updating firmware" step of updating an SE3 to iOS 18.2. And crashed with every subsequent attempt to Restore the phone, which left the phone unusable.

Installing the .exe version of iTunes, AND running as admin, worked to restore to factory settings.

However after the factory restore, iTunes would not restore the phone to the "backup to this computer" I had done prior to attempting the iOS update - the [Restore Backup...] button was greyed out.

I was able to restore the backup by installing the Apple Devices app, and restoring it from there.

Hmm. We-ell, cappellof, I have an iPhone 13 mini (is it so very different from a 13?) which was running iOS 18.1 . I was trying to update to 18.2 when I had my problem a few days ago. I followed janfromfarum's instructions, and the version of iTunes I received by download is v. 12.13.4.4, which was the same as the one I had, but the Apple .exe version succeeded where the other one failed. Should you still have the problem from October - do you? - do give the Apple site another go, BUT FIRST remove Apple Music and Apple Devices, should you have them installed on your PC. Those two programs and iTunes seem not to go well together, possibly because of a contention of access to the Library (at least).

My 13 mini is now running iOS 18.2, thanks to janfromfarum's guidance and the version of iTunes for Windows on the Apple site.

Thank you very much for good suggestions. My Iphone15 froze during IOS update about half way through. Thereafter neither ITunes nor Apple Devices would recognize the phone. Followed the suggestions to remove all Apple software on the PC and then install the downloaded exe file as Admin. Had to make three attempts at installing IOS before it worked. It stopped at firmware update and also received a mysterious error75 which seems not to exist when looking up error codes on the Apple support pages. My conclusion is that iTunes and Apple Devices are definitely not compatible and you can only have one of these installed at any point in time. Secondly, always re-start PC after installing Apple software. I lost last 2 months of photos and need to re-install apps etc., but better than having to replace a one year old phone…

Anyone have any thoughts on how to handle the Bonjour LSA popups when installing iTunes from Apple and using a computer with Windows 11 24h2? Getting the popups isn’t a big thing every couple days or so but would be good to have some conclusion on how to address these popups. Maybe they will go away with future iTunes or Windows updates? I’m afraid to uninstall Bonjour itself to cause any other iTunes issues.

Yes, I have occasionally missed the steps to cancel the pop-up invitation to download and update iOS, then backup the iPhone, and then take the update; when I have forgotten, I have been anxious until the update was complete. However, updating with iTunes in the .exe version - see janfromfarum's post - worked when nothing else did for me, and I think others, and so I wouldn't say "never update" with iTunes.

And yes, avoiding laziness is surely good advice, in many ways.

I know that.

It's a very old custome i have each time a new iOS X version is released to perform a clean IOS install in all my devices in order to rule out issues.

Also when a new ios x.x is released i used to plug in to the PC in order to download the entire image on the phone and from there update the phone.

Trying to do that nowadays is a real PAIN, crashes and brickwall devices all the time, in both iTunes and the new 3 apps for windows 11.

Because most of the people are lazy, that's their problem. If you have never had an issue with iOS CONGRATZ!!

Avoiding something that isn't necessary isn't "lazy." It's common sense.

I can't do those two anymore even if i want to because apple apps for windows are a mess!!

Then isn't it a great thing they are no longer necessary?
