iTunes 12.13.3.2 Crashing During iPhone 14 Restore on Windows 11 Pro

I’m experiencing a frustrating issue with iTunes version 12.13.3.2 on my Windows 11 Pro machine. Every time I try to restore my iPhone 14 (currently on iOS 17.x), iTunes crashes midway through the process. The application becomes unresponsive, and the restore fails. My iPhone also remains with logo and progress bar in midway. Here are a few key details:

  • iTunes Version: 12.13.3.2
  • OS: Windows 11 Pro (64-bit)
  • iPhone Model: iPhone 14
  • iOS Version: iOS 17.x

I’ve already tried the following troubleshooting steps:

  1. Reinstalled iTunes.
  2. Ensured that both iTunes and iOS are up to date.
  3. Restarted my PC and iPhone in recovery mode.
  4. Tried using different USB cables and ports.

Unfortunately, none of these have worked. Has anyone else encountered this issue, or is there a known fix? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Wow. A big time "THANK YOU" to @janfromfarum for posting a solution to iTunes crashing while updating iPhone.

Some details of my experience, in case it helps someone:

iTunes crashed for me in Windows 11 in the "updating firmware" step of updating an SE3 to iOS 18.2. And crashed with every subsequent attempt to Restore the phone, which left the phone unusable.

Installing the .exe version of iTunes, AND running as admin, worked to restore to factory settings.

However after the factory restore, iTunes would not restore the phone to the "backup to this computer" I had done prior to attempting the iOS update - the [Restore Backup...] button was greyed out.

I was able to restore the backup by installing the Apple Devices app, and restoring it from there.

If you want a good suggestion: Forget about all related apple for windows. If you have an Apple device don't plug it to a Windows machine cause it freezes the device if you want to update. Use only the device to perform restorations.

You don't need to plug your iPhone or iPad into a computer to update it.

LOL performing a clean ios install the cause of my problems, don't make me laugh.

And yet, by your own description, it's a problem. Most people gave up updating their phones with a computer years ago. I haven't done a clean install in probably a decade. I haven't had an issue with an update in all of that time.

I totally disagree at least regarding my first point.

You're also free to hit yourself in the head with a two-by-four if you want. That doesn't mean it's necessary or useful.

Anyways i'm not be able to perform any of those anymore at least on a PC thanks to Apple....

It sounds like you don't want to change an outdated habit even though it causes you problems but you do want to complain about it.

I thankfully stumbled across this forum while I was experiencing the same problem as @umogavis above, and after reading all the other positive trials here I decided to give it a try and it did work for me too.

Before you do anything, it will be very important to first put your iPhone into recovery mode so you can restart the updating process. Recovery mode is NOT the same as restoring your phone, so don't worry, you will not lose your data while you are doing this. You can find the steps here: If you can't update or restore your iPhone or iPod touch - Apple Support (CA). You can do steps 1-4 while the .exe version of iTunes is installing, and then do steps 5-6 once iTunes is ready to use again, and you are able to connect your iPhone to your computer.

I can confirm that uninstalling iTunes from my windows PC (via settings) and installing the .exe version provided by @janfromfarum was the right solution for me after putting my iPhone into recovery mode. I did not have to uninstall anything else, or install any other additional applications during the process, only iTunes.

Once I got the .exe version installed and ran the application as Administrator, I was able to pick up right where I left off - iTunes recognized that my iPhone was connected to my computer and was in recovery mode, and prompted me to either update the phone, or if updating was not possible, restore to factory settings.

Thankfully, I was able to choose the "update" option, and the update to iOS 18.3.1 was able to install smoothly and completely. I did not need to restore my phone from a backup.

Thank you so much for providing this solution

Had the same issue during update. Uninstalled itunes (the one i downloaded from microsoft store) delete every files related to it and softwares as well (Apple Devices) then install the one this hero attached. Run it as administrator and give the software every permissions it needed. First try i clicked "update" and didn't work, second try i closed the pop up dialogue telling me to update and click "Restore iPhone" and it finally worked!!! Thanks bro. U definitely deserve a medal
