Sequoia Calculator Paper Tape Gone?

Just upgraded to Sequoia. Lots of niceness; hooray, blah, blah, blah...

I use the Calculator - all the time; I use the Paper Tape - all the time.

Where did the Paper Tape go?

I see there is now a "Show History" - but it's grayed out when using "Scientific" in "RPN" mode.

Wait; what...?

Is there another toggle / workaround?

This may help with the missing tape on the calc app. I updated to Sequoia and discovered the tape missing. Grr. I always used it to check my entries for errors. I found that View-Show History - gives a truncated list of a long string of entries. But if I right-clicked on that truncated list, it showed the whole thing and also gave me the option of copying. So I could paste and print the tape if I needed it.

Yes, I really don't like the history compared to the Paper Tape. Why should I pay for an App now that Apple has changed this?

So that you have an app that better meets your needs? But you can continue to use an app you're unhappy with if you want. I don't care.

Overwhelmingly, people don't like this change.

If you're basing that on this thread or even on other threads in this forum, your sample is biased. People rarely post about something they're happy with, especially in a technical support forum. Do you really think that someone would notice the change, log in and say, "Hey, the calculator changed and I like it?"

The majority of people who use iPhones probably didn't even notice the change. Of those that did, most probably don't care.

What some people really don't like is any change.

This is the most annoying and pointless destruction of a functional app in memory. It is as if Apple had someone with no practical use experience destroy the functionality of the interface for no reason beyond busywork. Now I have to find a usable app that shows a column-format paper tape, SINCE THAT IS WHAT IS NEEDED WHEN ONE IS ADDING FIGURES. Jeez.

Maybe the Apple calculator isn’t the right one for you. That’s why there’s an App Store. It meets my needs perfectly, and for me is an improvement. Believe it or not, there are people in the world who don’t have the same needs or opinions that you do.

You are going to get some kick back here but hold strong. Apple didn’t do right here and when some complain there are a few that will tell you to use the App Store. The point is, it was a good app, now it’s meager. Too bad for us who liked it the way it was. 😉

I’m sorry, it was never a good app. And what does “hold strong “ mean? You can hold strong forever and it won’t change anything. Have you told Apple? Ranting in this user to user forum has zero chance of changing anything. However, thanks to a lot of users who DID provide positive feedback to Apple with iOS 18.3 it has been revised. Have you tried it?

No, not everyone needs the same thing. I never used the tape feature on this calculator or any other. A calculator is not an adding machine.

In every release there are thousands of changes.

I know you are explaining how Apple works.

But: In no reasonable sense of the word is the user interface more complicated with the paper tape than it is with the history.

Unless one discovered it in the Menu and invoked it, it was invisible. Same as history is now.

And if Apple wanted to remove that option from the Menu, they could simply have had the paper tape show all the time. A large number of users would be able to discern what this other window was displaying.

The second offense, of course, is the failure to notify the user of the two changes: 1) remove paper tape; 2) insert a new, modern, smaller typeface, black background, hidden feature, the history--without telling the user that they made the change.

In every release there are thousands of changes. If each of them were listed it would come to who knows how many pages, and no one would read them. In fact, probably 99% of users don’t even read the release notes that are linked to on the update page; did you?
