Sequoia Calculator Paper Tape Gone?

Just upgraded to Sequoia. Lots of niceness; hooray, blah, blah, blah...

I use the Calculator - all the time; I use the Paper Tape - all the time.

Where did the Paper Tape go?

I see there is now a "Show History" - but it's grayed out when using "Scientific" in "RPN" mode.

Wait; what...?

Is there another toggle / workaround?

Hey D-Brain,

Thanks for the reply!

Also, thanks for the confirmation.

DANG! I really hate it when Apple takes a perfectly good app and "improves" it by removing a valuable functionality (which in this case, was also quite elegant).

<heavy sigh>

Give us back the paper tape!!

No one here in this user-to-user forum can do that. Apple doesn't read here for feedback or suggestions. However, you can let them know your thoughts here:

In the mean time, have you tried the show history setting? View>Show History.

You can also look at other calculator apps in the App Store. PCalc is often recommended.

Not sure if this works on Apple Silicon, but worked flawlessly on 2019 Intel iMac & Sequoia.

Simply dig out the Calculator.app from previous MacOS version, seems any earlier than Calculator Version 11 will work fine.

I tried Calculator versions 10.15.4 from Catalina & 10.16 Ventura, all worked a treat

I have been using the notes app instead e.g type in

'4427.84+29.4+18+189.13+1.55+45.47+58.88+240+28.5 ='

then enter

the total will appear in yellow' 5,038.77'

if you press enter again it will jump to the next line

it is kind of similar to paper tape in calculator but yes I agree I like the paper tape in calculator more than the history that has replaced as the history is too small so you can't see all the numbers you typed in

hope the above helps

This is the most annoying and pointless destruction of a functional app in memory. It is as if Apple had someone with no practical use experience destroy the functionality of the interface for no reason beyond busywork. Now I have to find a usable app that shows a column-format paper tape, SINCE THAT IS WHAT IS NEEDED WHEN ONE IS ADDING FIGURES. Jeez.

You are going to get some kick back here but hold strong. Apple didn’t do right here and when some complain there are a few that will tell you to use the App Store. The point is, it was a good app, now it’s meager. Too bad for us who liked it the way it was. 😉

In every release there are thousands of changes.

I know you are explaining how Apple works.

But: In no reasonable sense of the word is the user interface more complicated with the paper tape than it is with the history.

Unless one discovered it in the Menu and invoked it, it was invisible. Same as history is now.

And if Apple wanted to remove that option from the Menu, they could simply have had the paper tape show all the time. A large number of users would be able to discern what this other window was displaying.

The second offense, of course, is the failure to notify the user of the two changes: 1) remove paper tape; 2) insert a new, modern, smaller typeface, black background, hidden feature, the history--without telling the user that they made the change.

In every release there are thousands of changes. If each of them were listed it would come to who knows how many pages, and no one would read them. In fact, probably 99% of users don’t even read the release notes that are linked to on the update page; did you?

Not so.

Not if Apple keeps the History, pays attention to feedback on History,

and also restores PaperTape for us millions who find it just what the old time inventors of paper tape calculators intended it to be, used it from the start, and want it back.

This discussion should not be between people who like History and those who prefer paper tape, about which is better. It should be between people who want to help others use History, people who provide info on substitutes for macOS Calculator, and people who want Apple to pay attention to feedback from paying customers.

There was literally no reason to remove the paper tape. It requires what? Four lines of code. They should have just kept it alongside the new history feature. It doesn't simplify the interface by not having it. I't just reduces the functionality of the app. Yeah, you can kind of do the same thing with the history panel, but not exactly.

I guess you haven’t bothered to read the 7 pages of the thread you already posted to.

Bottom Line: Apple could have implemented "the new user interface" while still leaving the tried & true (and elegant) Paper Tape as an option.

Apple could do a lot of things that they don't do. All you can do is submit feedback letting them know your thoughts:

The reality is Apple will never be able to please everyone all the time. That's why there are third-party apps.
