Streaming Apple Lossless to external DAC
Like many iTunes users I was delighted when Apple Music finally started offering Hi-Res FLAC audio for keen music lovers and audiophiles alike. However, having spent a great deal of money on a high quality external DAC I am keen to get the best audio quality from those lossless files. As a basic, I want the DAC's clock to match the sample rate of the file(s) I'm listening to.
If you plug any iOS device into your DAC it will output, via USB, at the sample rate of whatever you are listening to (dependent on your audio quality settings). This means 44.1kHz files will be output at 44.1k, 48kHz at 48kHz, 96 at 96 etc, eliminating any interpolation or resampling issues.
If you are using a Mac with macOS you have to set your output rate MANUALLY using Audio Midi setup (macOS system app). If you are listing to a compilation with a mixture of sample rates you have to do this manually and individually for each track (or leave it set to a single sample rate - say 48kHz, letting your CPU do the resampling conversion by which time you may as well have not bothered spending money on a decent DAC as the purity of the original 'Lossless' file is the corrupted by resampling.
Ironically, TIDAL and other third party streaming services will happily talk DIRECT to your DAC and output correct sample rate, allowing your DAC to switch on the fly, track by track but this isn't an option in Apple Music. Are there any other macOS users considering switching away from iTunes / Apple Music to TIDAL or others just so they can listen to music as it was recorded and intended to be played back?
Apple, if you are listening, you are seriously missing a trick here - you are offering a great selection of Lossless, High-Res audio material through Apple Music (great) but simultaneously alienating the type of person (audiophiles and hi-fi enthusiasts) who are actually most interested in that format in the first place. If a third party app running on macOS (like TIDAL) can send the correct bit-rate to my DAC automatically, why can't your own software manage it? Is it really that hard to fix (or even implement as an option?!)?
Maybe the resampling inside macOS is very, VERY good and I shouldn't be getting hung up about this but it would surely be an easy thing to include in Apple Music as an option, please?
