The only copy of my CV is in an old email. When I open the attachment it opens as text edit document. I need this to open in word where it was originally created so I can edit it.

Launch Word. Go to File>Open. Find the file you want to open and open it. You may need to change the file type at the bottom of the file window to "All File Types" (or whatever the specific wording is.
You an also drag and drop the file on to the Word icon.
Drag it to the Microsoft Word icon in the Dock. If needed, open it in TextEdit, copy its contents to the clipboard, and paste it into a new Word document.
