ipod touch 7th generation songs slow to start

ipod Touch 7th generation running 15.8.2 software. 256gig, almost full.

Use it exclusively for songs ripped from CDs, so no streaming. Songs have started to take upwards of 20 seconds to start when I first hit play.

Generally, if the current song plays all the way through, it seamlessly goes to the next song (no gaps between live recordings, for example). However, if it's a short song OR I press "next", then the next song will also take awhile to load.

Last time this happened I was able to correct it by uploding the latest IOS. However, I just updated to 15.8.2 and it's still doing it.

Any suggestions? When it's running correctly, songs load up and play almost instantly.

It might be due to the lack of available memory on the iPod, caused by the fact that it's almost full with music.

You can try removing some of the music as a test and see if that helps. If it does, then a possible solution is to keep less music on it, but use Smart Playlists to automatically remove and add music to the iPod, dependant upon rules that you choose.

To remove some music temporarily, untick (uncheck) songs in your library. iTunes' default is to sync all music, except if it has been unticked. The screenshot below (Device/Settings/Summary) shows the setting:

Don't just remove one or two songs; in your main library deselect an entire genre, or several albums and do that first. Then connect the iPod, make sure that the setting is still on and then tap the Sync button to makes the changes on the iPod.

If this proves helpful, the permanent option is to Sync selected playlists, artists, albums and genres. That option is on the Device/Settings/Music pane (1.):

The method I use is to have a Smart Playlist (or two) that removes songs that you've played, thereby freeing up space, and putting them back after a set period, when there's space left by other songs being removed after playing.

If you think the idea might be of use to you, post back and I can provide more details on how it works, including helping you set up a test Smart Playlists in iTunes. Once you have the Smart Playlist workin g the way that suits you, you could then add it to your iPod.

I appreciate the detailed reply. I started by just deleting about 8 gigs of songs. Still loads slowly. Maybe somewhat faster than before? But still a noticeable lag, and definitely slower than before (including on a classic ipod with a physical harddrive).

Maybe a cache or something that needs to be cleared?

Not a huge deal in the scheme of things, since otherwise it works fine. But still frustrating and something that would seem to have an obvious fix.
