iPod Classic suddenly not recognized by Music

MY last-generation iPod classic, 160gb SSD, is all of a sudden a complete mystery to Music. (I'm at Monterey 12.6.6 as of last night). Everything was fine as of a couple of weeks ago, but now Music never even shows the iPod as being connected. I have restored it several times, and each time the "restore" function in the Finder never seems to complete, and regardless, I never see the "sync iPod" button in the Finder window. Help! Thanks.

Some unknown iOS process was apparently running endlessly in the background. Turned the computer off, restarted, and we're in something resembling business. Oh well.
