Contact icons missing in Messages app

I have a friend who is using an iPhone 12 with iOS 17 and in her messages app, she does not see the circle icon next to each message. I'm not talking about any pinned people at the top of the app but rather the main list of messages you see when you first open the Messages app. Those circles usually contain an initial, initials or an icon.

Every other person I know with an iPhone sees these icons and I have been unable to determine what hides (or shows) these icons.

Figured out why my contact photos were not showing up. The display zoom must be set to default, not larger text in order for the contact photos to show up on the message list.

Settings/Display & Brightness/Display Zoom> set to default.

The solution —> settings > messages > show contact photos.

after 17.4.1 update mine became toggled off, turn back on & now it looks normal.

I have the same issue when I upgraded to an iPhone 15 Pro from a 11 Pro. Both phones are on iOS version 17.2.1 and as mentioned above there is no longer a round icon with initials or contact photo if set up. When I open up the message the initials or contact photos appears at the top of the screen.
