iOS e-mails found by search won't open

All of the below is on an iPhone 11 Pro on the latest version of iOS as of 24 Sep 2023.

I've had this problem for years and still can't diagnose it. In iOS Mail, if I enter a search term and hit "search" (either for "All Mailboxes" or "Current Mailbox"), when I get a list of "found" messages, if I tap on the message, I get a blank (black) screen. All the message controls (trash can, folder, etc) at the bottom appear, as do the up and down arrows in the upper right corner, but no text. Additionally, I can tap twice on the "down" arrow, and a message appears (oddly, it is NOT in the list of found messages). If I then tap the up arrow once, the text of the original message that I tapped on DOES appear.

Any ideas?
