Why can’t I move the cursor to edit in messages after updating to iOS 17?

I was composing a message but after typing I remembered something that I needed to include and to do so I needed to move the cursor back to a sentence near the beginning. I tried placing it, I got a circle with the cursor in the right place but as soon as I removed my finger it went to the end of the message, I tried dragging it but it would stop at the top of the window and it would go no further when I tried, then as soon as I put my finger on it, it went to the end of the message. Not the feature I expected or want
