Mail from VIP contact going to spam folder

Every once in a while I have legitimate email ending up in my spam folder. My most recent experience is particularly mystifying:

I've been in an email conversation with one of my cousins, who is in my contacts and is marked as "VIP". Up until a few days ago I received replies from him in my regular inbox, but today I noticed that the last few messages he sent me (part of the same thread) ended up in my spam folder.

Can someone point me to something which would help me troubleshoot this issue. It is very annoying.

Also, why isn't the Mail app listed when I go to choose a topic?

Hey there Wet Baloney,

While we're unable to answer your question regarding why 'Mail' wasn't an option to choose from regarding the issue topic, we'd like to help however we can regarding some mail automatically being sent to your junk folder on your Mac. Let's start with learning more about what's happening, along with ruling out some possible causes:

  1. When did this start, and are the affected messages you're receiving being sent to your iCloud mail account(or a different one)?
  2. Have you marked the messages that intentionally went to the junk folder as 'Not Junk'? The steps to do this can be found under the section 'Mark messages as junk or not junk' in this article: Reduce junk mail in Mail on Mac If you've already performed these steps, let us know if the same issue occurred again for any messages you marked as 'Not Junk'.
  3. We see you have macOS 13.5 installed, but the latest version is macOS 13.5.2. You can verify this by clicking on the Apple logo at the top left corner of the screen, then on ‘About This Mac’. In case you needed it, this link shows how to first back up, then update: Update macOS on Mac If you already have macOS 13.5.2 installed, sometimes unexpected behavior can be resolved with a restart. Check out the section ‘Restart your Mac' here: Shut down or restart your Mac

Cheers!
