When I tap on contact name to delete, it goes into calling mode. How can I tap on a name without calling the person? Mine is iPhone 6s.

You're probably using the Phone app instead of the Contacts app, and you're presented with your recent calls. Here's how to delete a contact:

You have to click the contact you want to edit first.

It is showing only + sign, apparently, meaning I can add contacts.
