I'm assuming you have tried toggling the mute button on the keyboard and tried adjusting the volume up & down using the keyboard?
If so, try rebooting the laptop. Rebooting can fix a lot of things.
If none of this works and this is an Intel Mac, then try a PRAM Reset (hold for at least two chime, or three if 2017 or earlier).
Can you adjust the audio when using headphones or external speakers?

Troubleshooting Muted Mac:
Try Resetting the Core Audio:
Use following command in Terminal:
sudo killall coreaudiod
To get to Terminal go to: Applications > Utilities > Terminal
Did you try the suggestion given by tjk in the first Similar Question link above? This is it:
Try going to Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup > Built-in Output > Output > uncheck the Mute box.

Troubleshooting No Sound:
A. Start with a Restart:
Try restarting your Mac.
B. Single-Out this Mac:
If you re still having issues, then create a new user (for temporary, troubleshooting purposes), and then see if you se the same error. If not, then it is an error with the current user. If so, then it is likely a hardware error, or a setting within the BIOS.
