MacBook Pro defaults to muted sound

This happens constantly. I repeatedly access the SOUND settings.

I have unchecked the MUtE button (which I never, ever hit, myself). I have speakers set to MacBook Pro output, at medium.

Then I followed these directions, posted much earlier:

SMC RESET

Reset the SMC of your Mac - Apple Support

  • Shut down the computer.
  • Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
  • Wait 15 seconds.
  • Attach the computers power cable.
  • Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
  • The 5 second timing is important to a successful reset.

After the 5 second timing, the sound was once again set to MUTE

I have no sound on a fairly new MacBook Pro, that was a gift from my Dad. Sure don't wanna vent to him. He's 81 and can't figure out how to turn on his Kindle. LOL Please help me ?

What is the exact model of your Mac? You can get this information by clicking the Apple menu and selecting "About This Mac".

An SMC Reset is only available for Intel Macs. If you do have an Intel Mac, then try a PRAM Reset since that would clear the NVRAM which holds some settings such as audio level & screen brightness, plus some other things. Hold the PRAM Reset for at least two chimes if possible, but some USB-C Macs may not allow more than one chime (older non-USB-C models can usually allow for three chimes).

Edit: Also which version of macOS is being used?
