Storage Doubled After Downloading From Google Photos To iPhone

I switched from Android to iPhone back in 2022 and transferred my photos and videos using Google Photos. After downloading everything on my Google Photos to my iPhone, the storage occupied by the photos doubled (from about 90GB on my Google Photos to 180GB on my iPhone storage). At first I thought it might take some time for iPhone/iCloud to process these photos and some cache is needed.

A year later, I checked my iPad and noticed that the same thing happened on my iPad (even though the pics on my iPad are not from Google Photos but synced with my iPhone through iClouds).

So in short, the problem is that the same set of photos and videos occupy around 100GB on my Google Photos but 200GB on my iClouds/iPhone/iPad Storage. I am sure that both are set to original quality mode and no duplicates are found in the albums.

Hello Matthew_Liao,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities.

We understand that you’re concerned that the photos imported from Google Photos to your iPhone are using twice as much storage. We are happy to help.

Did you have any photos that you had taken on your iPhone prior to downloading the photos from Google Photos? Did you download the full resolution of the photos?

Please use the steps here to restart your iPhone: Restart your iPhone - Apple Support

"How to restart your iPhone X, 11, 12, 13, or later

  1. Press and hold either volume button and the side button until the power-off slider appears.
  2. Drag the slider, then wait 30 seconds for your device to turn off. If your device is frozen or unresponsive, force restart your device.
  3. To turn your device back on, press and hold the side button (on the right side of your iPhone) until you see the Apple logo."

Here’s additional information on downloading photos and videos: Download iCloud photos and videos - Apple Support

"On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

  1. On iCloud.com, tap Photos.
  2. Tap Select, then tap a photo or video. To select multiple photos or videos, tap more than one. To select your entire library, tap Select All.
  3. Tap the more button  .
  4. Choose Download, then tap Download to confirm.

If your photos download as a ZIP archive, learn how to uncompress the folder on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. "

Let us know if you have further questions.

Take care.
