Why the app photos is taking so much space from my phone if I only have a few photos and iCloud on?

The app Photos is taking so much storage from my phone

I don't understand why the Photos app is taking 17gb of space in my phone if on iCloud my photos only occupy 3gb? Besides, wasn’t iCloud suppose to liberate space from the phone when we uploaded the photos in the cloud? I pay to have more space in iCloud since my phone only has 64gb. However I’m so frustrated because the app photos is taking so much storage from my phone and I literally don’t understand why because I have less than 500 photos and besides they’re all uploaded to iCloud.

Hi heydavee,

From your description, you may not have iCloud Photos enabled or properly configured for your device. Set up and use iCloud Photos describes this feature in detail. The specific section for saving storage space on your device is:

"If you need to save space on your device

iCloud Photos keeps all your photos and videos in their original, high-resolution version. To save storage space on your device, you can turn on Optimize Storage.

If you turn on Optimize Storage, iCloud Photos automatically manages the size of your library on your device. Your original photos and videos are stored in iCloud and space-saving versions are kept on your device. Your library is optimized only when you need space, starting with the photos and videos you access least. You can download the original photos and videos over Wi-Fi or cellular when you need them.

If you turn on Download Originals, iCloud Photos keeps your original, full-resolution photos and videos in iCloud and on your device."

Regards.

Hello.

Yes, that’s where I’ve gotten the information and that’s how I noticed that the photos app was taking so much space, which I don’t understand because honestly I just have like 500 photos in total, so there’s no way 500 photos take 17gb. I deleted the photos from “recently deleted” as well, and it didn’t really make a change in the space taken by the app.
