What about a child who ages over 18 and wants to continue sharing prior purchases with the family, but use his own payment method for future?

This seems to be impossible. My 19yo son wants to be able to use his own payment method for future purchases, but also still share the purchases that were made from before. Seems like the only way to do this is to turn off Purchase Sharing, or remove him from the family. Which means he would lose access to years and years of purchases. Is he supposed to buy all the same content again (movies, music, etc)??

iPhone 7, iOS 12

Here is one way to do it: He can stay on the Family Sharing group. Going forward, he can use his own funds to purchase and redeem gift cards to his own Apple ID. so that he always maintains a credit balance sufficient to cover his own purchases. By staying in the Family Sharing group, he also will have continues access to the purchases of other members.
