Why does AirTag set up ask to switch location sharing someone else iPhone?

In middle of setting up 4 AirTags, keep getting this popup message: “To improve Airtag location accuracy  switch your location sharing from “[name of son’s iphone]” to this iPhone.”

What does that mean?

  1. he lives in another country. How help location accuracy?
  2. He hasn’t had a iPhone in years, if ever.
  3. I’ve never agree to “location sharing” with anyone, site or even Apple.
  4. Why How Did my new iPhone pick him? it got his first, middle and last name correct. so it’s somewhere in system, isn't it?
  5. I've been using new iPhone 13 for 2 months. Why did his name and iPhone suddenly appear when adding AirTags?

Apple page on how to set up AirTag never warms of possible popup on set up. Also, any good explanation of “location sharing” with other people? I understand it with websites or when searching. But when else does my iPhone what to share my location? And why?

muguy, Thanks.

never checked that site before. it doesn't show any other devices. 2 iPhones that are both mine. I've never given anyone, including family my Apple ID and password.

Regardless of how-why Apple got his info, probably from Contacts, is my guess at this moment, you're saying I should have checked Yes, switch to my iPhone.

But when go to My Location page, it says "From iPhone [son's name]" and below that Use this iPhone as my Location. it's highlighted but when I click on it nothing happens. I've set it to "Not sharing location." Pls don't tell me that I got to set up to share my location to use AirTags. I thought I'd researched all the requirements for AirTags w/o a word about location sharing.

It sounds like your son may have used the same Apple ID when his iPhone was set up. You can verify devices attached to your account at appleid.apple.com. You can remove his iPhone. All that the message is telling you is that you should use your current device for location sharing so that your device can find your AirTags.
