Is there a fix for Mail not doing italic type on a 2023 MacBook Pro?

Bought the newest MacBook Pro last week and have transferred everything over and updated to Ventura 13.2.1. So far it's mostly good – except for the fact that the italics button is grayed out in Mail. I've tried to send emails through the Mail client using a Yahoo! and a Gmail address but neither would convert regular text to italics, whether I tried to use keyboard shortcuts or the menu.

Is there a fix? Is it a known problem?

Not all fonts support italics. Check which Message Font you have as default in Mail Settings and change it to something standard like Helvetica. Or any other. You might need to experiment. I know that Helvetica can change to Italics. Check Mail settings, Fonts and Colors.
