Renaming a (TextEdit) file in its title bar works very strangely...

I recently installed Monterey 12.6.3 and am just settling in. This observation applies to at least TextEdit and Preview, the two apps in which I need to do this most often.

When an existing Textedit document has been modified, and want to re-name it, it had been sufficient to click in the title bar and type the new name in the NAME field, then hit <return>.

It isn't working like that in Monterey, and it doesn't work in Safe Mode either.

Scenario: a TextEdit file has been modified. To rename it:

  • Click in the title bar, click on the drop-down arrow.

The drop-down fields are Names, Tags, and Where.

  • Click in the names field, change the name, hit <return>.

The change is not retained in either title window or Name field.

  • But change the name as described, TAB to the Tags field, and

The name changes instantly, no <return> required.

  • Change the name and click in -not Tab to- 'Where', the name does not change unless the location is changed.

This prior support query seems equivalent, but the solution did not work.

Hi Paul Reitz

Re: Renaming Files using Monterey

Here's Apple Support's method for Monterey:

Rename files, folders and disks on Mac – Apple Support

Eg: Rename one item

On your Mac, select the item, then press Return.

Or force click the item’s name.

Enter a new name.

Press Return.

Preview for Monterey's tips:

Save PDFs and images in Preview on Mac – Apple Support

says:Eg:

To save a file using a different filename:

press and hold the Option key, then choose File > Save As.

Text Edit using Monterey

The File > Rename option seems to work quickly and smoothly.

All the best :-)

Salutations Paul Reitz,

If you save your documents to iCloud, please test saving locally on your Mac’s hard drive and let’s see if the behavior changes. You’ll make that change in the ‘Where’ field. Save documents in TextEdit on Mac

You may also consider resetting defaults, in case anything has been changed. Change preferences in TextEdit on Mac

Click to revert all preferences in both “New Document” and “Open and Save” panes to their initial settings.

Thanks.

I have to apologize... forgot to mention a significant detail: the file is already open - I've made an edit and want to update the name while it's still open. Thus the title bar method.

It's apparent from the responses that peoples' experience varies, as do the diagnostics needed. But my patience for working through the issue is limited, particulary since a new M1 Pro will arrive tomorrow to replace the current, and it will be further modified by an update to Ventura, I'lll stick with the two most palatable solutions:

    • live with tabbing to Tags before <return>,

or,

    • use the keyboard shortcut I added to enable File>Rename... in the menu bar. All keyboard.

Thanks for the suggested readings, but I expect there will soon be a much different list. 😉
