Unable to add Contacts to Groups in the Contacts application.

Still unable to add a Contact to a Group in the Contacts app. I've done this for years, reviewed the procedure linked to this thread, still not working. This has been a problem for a few weeks. Still need to be running Monterey due to compatibility issues..

Is there a procedure to refresh the Contact database?

Thanks for your reply, Chris_V89, but unfortunately the problem is not resolved. The following step does NOT allow me to drop click-dragged iCloud Contacts (Version 2498.5) onto any iCloud Groups.

"2. Drag one or more contacts to another group on the left."

Google Groups DO ALLOW drag-dropping of Contacts. iCloud is the default account.

Also, "list" options do not appear in my Contacts sidebar or Preference options.

All suggestions welcome, I hope that my Contacts/Address Book files have not been corrupted.

Hey there mikegit,

Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Communities.

Just to clarify, when you say that you're trying to add a contact to a group, are you referring to adding the contact to a list as shown in this link here: Create and change lists in Contacts on Mac - Apple Support

Add contacts to a list
1. In the Contacts app  on your Mac, select one or more contacts listed in the sidebar.
There’s no limit to the number of contacts you can add to a list. If you use more than one account in Contacts, make sure the contacts you select are in the same account.
2. Drag the selected contacts to a list in the sidebar.
If the contacts aren’t added to the list, check if it’s a Smart List—you can’t add contacts to a Smart List.

If you use an Exchange account in Contacts, those contacts can belong to only one folder at a time. Any contacts that aren’t in a folder you create are in the default Exchange Contacts folder.

If so, what happens when you try adding a contact to a list? Also, do you sync your contacts with iCloud or another third-party email account? If you sync your contacts with iCloud, are you able to add a contact to a list on iCloud.com with the steps in this next link here: Create and manage groups of contacts on iCloud.com - Apple Support

Add contacts to a group
When you add a contact to another group, the contact also remains in the All Contacts group.
1. In Contacts on iCloud.com, click All Contacts.
2. Drag one or more contacts to another group on the left.
3. You can add a contact to more than one group. Drag the contact to each group you want to add it to.

Keep us updated on the results.

Take care!

Thanks for your reply, bbesspete, hopefully I’ll be able to resolve this issue soon. At this time I am only able to reliably enter or edit Contacts from my iPhone.

I have read the documentation at the links you provided. I noticed that the result of a Safe Mode boot can result in reinstalling the operating system. I am in the late stages of delivering a finished music product to a client and the considerable time needed to rebuild my system after an macOS reinstall is a risk I can not afford to take at this time.

If anyone has suggestions or research I could do before a reinstall I would be happy to read them until my project delivery is completed. I could delete or edit Contacts during this time before trying a Safe Mode restart. If there is a way to measure the Contacts database or “reset” it without an OS reinstall I might risk it.

Thanks in advance,

mikegit

Thanks for your reply, ghr165, and I apologize for my late response.

To clarify, I'm not concerned about an accidental reinstall. I'm concerned about a MANDATORY reinstall. If the Safe Mode boot process triggers a reinstall based on what is encountered during the Safe Mode boot process, I may not be able to back out of it without reinstalling macOS.

Before I try Safe Mode I would like to perform any available Contacts repair or maintenance procedures OTHER THAN Safe Mode restart. If deleting Contacts, reducing Contact note field content (some of mine are large), or deleting Contacts Groups I would like to do that first before attempting a Safe Mode restart.

I only recently learned that apparently there are Card count and size limits. I have been using many of the same Contacts for many years. Are procedures or reports available to determine how close I am to these limits on my MacBook Pro M1?

All suggestions welcomed.
