Contacts - Can't add contacts to group

Contacts app needs some programmer love, this has been a problem since 2016 from what I can see here!

I'm trying to create a new group in contacts (*not* a "Smart group").

I've created the group (File-->New Group). Tried creating it in the iCloud section of the sidebar and "On my Mac". Same behaviour.

I select "All Contacts" and enter a keyword to search. If the contact is not in Contacts, but is found in Mail, you *must* "Add to Contacts" before it allows you to drag that contact into a group.

You *might* be able to do this once or twice, but soon Contacts refuses to allow you to drag anything else into the new Group you've created.

If you quit Contacts and re-open holding down the shift key, you can add one or two more, and then it once again stops responding to drags.

Anyone else experience this? Or have a solution?

Thanks but that doesn’t answer the issue I am having.

I am only able to add a single group or add just one contact to a group before it stops working again and I have to quit out and reopen whilst holding down the shift key to add the next contact.

It’s a groundhog thing over and over!

Am am able to create groups smoothly on MacOS12.6 following Apple's method in the linked article. (Just made two new extra groups to check.)

Can not see where it is not working for you, unless it is the searching you need to do. Maybe you need to search and add to contacts before you create a new group.

Try clicking the + sign and creating / naming a new group.

Select "All Contacts", and drag as many as you wish into the new group.

(My contacts are listed alphabetically. I "drag" each contact into the new group.)

Trying to understand your issue, yet can not see anywhere it "stops working" ?
