Safari 16.1 - no favicon on Favourites bar

Is it possible for favicons to display on the Favourites bar in Safari?

I'd have thought it was a rather basic use case. But try as I might I can't seem to find a solution.

Bit of history... I've imported my Chrome bookmarks to Safari. Thought I'd give Safari more of a go.

I very much like the Favourites bar as it takes up little screen room and allows quick access to bookmarked websites. (The sidebar eats up too much screen and just gets annoying opening/closing it all the time).

In Chrome it shows the Favicon and text, although you can remove the text and just have the favicon displaying. Which takes up less room and is also very very quick and easy to visually ID the site you want to visit.

After importing, in Safari I have very one colour grey environment, which is much harder to visually navigate and looks very boring by comparison.

Chrome favourites bar:

Favicons displaying nicely and text too if you want it.

Safari 16.1 favourites bar:

Where there was no text it now only displays only a grey square. And no sign of any favicon on the bar at all. I have cleared the favicon cache out and I'm now seeing favicons on the tabs and sidebar when I visit new sites. So why don't they show on the favourites bar too?

I note the overspill of the Favourites bar (the >> button on the far right of the bar) Favicons display in the extended menu on some sites.

But if I rearrange/move that item to be on the actual favourites bar, the favicon again doesn't display.

Surely it can't be an active design decision to not display favicons in the favourites bar can it?
