While listening to music on my Airpods Pro 2, I receive a Facetime call but the audio goes to the phone speaker

Hi,

I'd be listening to music on my Airpods Pro 2 when I receive a FaceTime call. I answer it, but the audio goes by default to my phone speaker, even though I'm still wearing my Airpods. I have to manually switch to the airpods.

Phone: iPhone 14 Pro, iOS 16.1.1

Airpods Pro 2, firmware version 5B58

That is not expected behavior, is it?

I'd appreciate any help.

Thank you!

Hey there msordo,

Yes, if it was set to automatic it should've automatically switched to your AirPods Pro (2nd generation). Does the same issue continue after restarting your iPhone 14 Pro? We're asking this as a restart can refresh the iOS and connections to other devices (like your AirPods Pro) and may help resolve this. If needed, the steps below show:

"How to restart your iPhone X, 11, 12, 13, or later

  1. Press and hold either volume button and the side button until the power-off slider appears.
  2. Drag the slider, then wait 30 seconds for your device to turn off. If your device is frozen or unresponsive, force restart your device.
  3. To turn your device back on, press and hold the side button (on the right side of your iPhone) until you see the Apple logo."

Those steps are from this article: Restart your iPhone - Apple Support

If the issue continues, you could also try resetting your AirPods Pro and connecting those again, as a reset can sometimes help resolve unexpected issues too. If needed, this article walks you through how to do that: How to reset your AirPods and AirPods Pro - Apple Support

Please let us know how those steps go or if you've already tried these steps.

Take care.

Hi msordo,

The following steps address what you're describing specifically, and should provide a solution:

"Go to Settings  > Accessibility > Touch > Call Audio Routing, then choose an audio destination."

You can find these steps along with other information that may be helpful, here: Route and automatically answer calls on iPhone – Apple Support

If you have followed the steps correctly and you still have the issue, let us know if you get any specific alerts or error messages when trying, as those may help us determine what might be causing the issue.

We also recommend restarting your device and keeping it updated as those steps assure you have cleared out any minor software issues and are running the most current version.

Hello msordo,

Apple released iOS 16.1.2 today: About iOS 16 Updates - Apple Support

We'd suggest updating your iPhone to this version and test the issue further: Update your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

Update your iPhone or iPad wirelessly

1. Back up your device using iCloud or your computer.
2. Plug your device into power and connect to the internet with Wi-Fi.
3. Go to Settings > General, then tap Software Update.
4. If you see more than one software update option available, choose the one that you want to install.

The Settings app on iPhone showing options to update to iOS 15.7 or iOS 16.

5. Tap Install Now. If you see Download and Install instead, tap it to download the update, enter your passcode, then tap Install Now. If you don't know your passcode, learn what to do.

If the issue continues to occur, do you have the same issue when you pair them with another device and listen to music with an incoming call? Here's how to pair them with another device to test this further: Set up AirPods with your Mac and other Bluetooth devices - Apple Support (That will tell us if the issue only happens on your iPhone or on multiple devices with the AirPods connected.)

Does this only occur with the YouTube app and FaceTime on your iPhone? You could test another app, like Music. As that will isolate the behavior further for us.

Hoping to hear back, take care.

It just happened to me again. I restarted the phone a couple of times since the first time. Listening to music, get a Facetime video call, accept it, and it switches to my phone speaker 😞. It happens when I'm listening to music on YouTube Music. I don't know if it's that app that somehow keeps hold of the airpods Pro. Once my call was done, it resumed music playback on the airpods pro.

HI, I with a XS iphone(and a lot of others by the look) have the same problem, answer a call wearing pro 2nd gen with Siri and it comes through the iphone, taking the pods out to use the phone and after a few seconds it goes back to the pods while in my hand or pocket even after selecting iphone audio in the menu. I have tried re paring and it may be ok 1or2 times then goes back to the problem. Updated to ios16.1.2 last night but same same problem. Would switching from the automatic option to the bluetooth headset (hearing aid) route work ie. would we still be able to use phone audio when not wearing airpods??

In anticipation thanks for the initial question and your reply.

Hi, so I talked to apple support and this solution worked for me, in case it helps other folks having the same issue:

Please follow the below steps

1 Put your AirPods in their charging case, and close the lid.

2 Wait 30 seconds.

3 Open the lid of your charging case, and put your AirPods in your ears.

4 Go to Settings > Bluetooth. Or go to Settings > [your AirPods].

• If your AirPods appear there as connected, tap the More Info button  next to your AirPods, tap Forget This Device, then tap again to confirm.

• If your AirPods don't appear there, continue to the next step.

5 Put your AirPods in their charging case, and keep the lid open.

6 Press and hold the setup button on the back of the case for about 15 seconds, until the status light on the front of the case flashes amber, then white.*

7 Reconnect your AirPods: With your AirPods in their charging case and the lid open, place your AirPods close to your iPhone or iPad. Follow the steps on your device's screen.
